Product Description
Have you ever tried to find a pattern for a plain man's sweater with no luck? Meet the Daddy-Son sweater, a simple crewneck created in collaboration with my husband. It features an unusual shoulder detail and closely fitted sleeves as, according to my other half, "Men don't like baggy sleeves. We like to show off our muscles!" Despite the straightforward look, it's an exciting knitting project as it is a seamless top-down construction with simultaneously worked sleeves. And there are no short rows!

What is Being Made
The Daddy-Son Sweater is a coordinating knit garment designed for fathers and sons to wear together. This seamless, top-down construction sweater is available in eight graduated sizes, ranging from finished bust circumferences of 62 cm (24¾") up to 131 cm (52½"), making it suitable for children through adult wearers. The design is intended to be worn with 5–15 cm (2–6") of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.
Construction Technique
This sweater employs a seamless, top-down construction worked entirely in the round, a popular modern knitting method that eliminates the need for seaming and creates a continuous fabric. The yoke is the focal point of the construction process:
- Back neckline stitches are cast on to establish the foundation
- Shoulders and neckline shaping are achieved using lifted increases, a technique that creates new stitches from existing loops without adding bulk
- Front shoulder stitches are picked up along the back shoulder edges and worked with additional increases to shape the front neckline opening
- Sleeve cap stitches are picked up along the front shoulder edges
- The yoke is worked in the round down to the underarm, with increases worked along the armhole edges to accommodate the body width
- Body and sleeves are then separated and worked independently
- The body continues in the round down to the hem
- Sleeve stitches are transferred from holders to working needles and completed in the round all the way to the cuffs
Stitches and Techniques
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches and shaping methods appropriate for an intermediate-level knitter:
- Lifted increases for seamless yoke shaping
- Picking up stitches along edges to create the front shoulders and sleeve caps
- Circular knitting throughout the yoke, body, and sleeves
- Strategic increases along armhole edges to shape the garment
Materials
This pattern is designed to work with aran and worsted weight yarns, both medium-weight options that knit at similar gauges. These yarn weights are ideal for creating garments with good drape and durability, suitable for everyday wear. The pattern requires circular needles appropriate to the chosen yarn weight to accommodate the seamless, in-the-round construction method.
Size Range and Finished Measurements
Eight sizes are provided to accommodate a wide range of body types:
- Size 1: 62 cm (24¾") finished bust
- Size 2: 73.5 cm (29½") finished bust
- Size 3: 82 cm (32¾") finished bust
- Size 4: 89 cm (35½") finished bust
