Product Description

This is a traditional fair isle hat knitted in Shetland wool. It features 2 coloured ribbing and some old, traditional style OXO patterns originating from Fair Isle in Shetland. Kame is the Shetland word for the unique ridges hills that typify the Shetland landscape. Our simple treeless landscape is a hidden world of peat and bog where flora and fauna abound. Sometimes deceivingly bleak the hills burst into life with plants such as bog cotton, bog asphodel, tormentil and heather depending on the season. The colours in this hat are based on some of those I see on my hikes. The hills have remained untouched for thousands of years and now more than ever should be valued and protected.

What Is Being Made

The Da Kame Hat is a knitted hat inspired by the Shetland landscape. The design takes its name from "kame," the Shetland word for the unique ridged hills that characterize the region's terrain. This finished hat features a 50cm circumference at the brim and measures 20cm in length from brim to crown, creating a classic, close-fitting hat suitable for everyday wear. The color palette is derived directly from the natural landscape of Shetland, incorporating shades that reflect the region's flora and seasonal variations, including plants such as bog cotton, bog asphodel, tormentil, and heather.

Craft and Techniques

This is a knitting project designed at an intermediate skill level. The hat is worked in the round using the traditional method for small circumferences, which creates a seamless, tubular construction. The design emphasizes the importance of achieving proper tension before beginning, as this directly affects the finished fit and drape of the garment. Knitters are advised to adjust needle size if necessary to match the required tension of 30 stitches and 38 rounds to 10 centimeters after blocking. Blocking is an essential finishing step for this project to achieve the correct dimensions and fabric characteristics.

Stitches and Construction

While specific stitch abbreviations are referenced in the pattern, the Da Kame Hat employs fundamental knitting stitches worked in rounds. The seamless, in-the-round construction method is ideal for creating fitted hats without seaming. The pattern includes a color chart on page 2 that guides the colorwork throughout the design, allowing knitters to incorporate the landscape-inspired shades in a structured, repeatable pattern.

Materials Required

  • Needles: One set of UK metric 3mm double pointed needles, which are the preferred tool for working small circumferences in the round
  • Yarn: Jamieson & Smith 2 ply jumper weight yarn in 25g balls. The pattern requires 1 ball of each shade used; refer to the color chart for specific shade selections

Note: The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF format, making it accessible for immediate use once purchased.
