This downloadable PDF from Sirdar contains patterns for two coordinating home accessories: a generous square Leaf Throw measuring approximately 96 x 96 cm (37¾ x 37¾ in) and a matching Cushion Cover measuring approximately 41 x 41 cm (16 x 16 in). Both projects are rated as beginner-friendly, making this an ideal pattern for newer knitters looking to create stylish, practical home décor items. The two pieces are designed to complement each other and work beautifully together as a coordinated set.
The centrepiece of this pattern is the Leaf Throw, a large, square blanket worked in Sirdar Crofter DK shade 100. The throw is constructed from individually knitted leaf motifs, which are a charming and classic decorative element in hand knitting. Each leaf is shaped using a sequence of increases and decreases to create a realistic, tapered form. The leaves are worked as separate pieces and then assembled to form the finished throw, giving the overall fabric a beautifully textured, botanical appearance.
The leaf shaping is achieved through a detailed row-by-row sequence. Decreases such as k2tog (knit two together) are used progressively to taper the leaf to its point, while the combination of knit and purl stitches within the leaf rows adds surface texture and definition. The pattern includes specific shaping rows — for example, rows working k2tog, k7 through to k2tog, k3, reducing down to just 4 stitches before casting off — demonstrating the careful, structured decreasing that gives each leaf its authentic shape.
The Cushion Cover is worked in Sirdar Crofter DK shade 099, a complementary colourway that pairs naturally with the throw. The cover is knitted to fit a 41 x 41 cm (16 x 16 in) cushion pad and features a zip fastening (a 36 cm / 14 in zip is required) for a neat, practical finish. The main fabric of the cushion cover is worked in stocking stitch throughout, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows — a foundational technique in knitting that produces a smooth, classic fabric on the right side.
The centre throw section of the cushion is cast on using the thumb method with 106 stitches, and the stocking stitch fabric is worked continuously until the required dimensions are reached. The simplicity of the stocking stitch construction makes this an excellent project for beginner knitters to build confidence and consistency in their tension and technique.
