Product Description
This shawl is an asymmetrical, elongated triangle that grows from one point toward the opposite side. It begins with just a few stitches and as it grows, it forms a wide cable and lace border, later adding on a stockinette body along the top. This pattern will look great in solid or semi-solid colors.
The twisting cables and lace in the border of this shawl are embellished with sparkling beads. The pattern itself is easy to memorize; the zigzags in the lace are created naturally through the bias of the decrease stitches.
The length of the shawl may be increased or decreased by adding or subtracting repeats of the pattern in order to use up the entire skein of yarn.
Gauge is not critical for this pattern, but using a different yarn weight or needle size will affect the size of the finished shawl and the amount of yarn and beads required.
Crystal Twist Shawl by Emily Wood
What is Being Made
The Crystal Twist Shawl is an asymmetrical, elongated triangular shawl designed by Emily Wood. This knitted accessory measures 52 inches (138 cm) in length and reaches 16 inches (41 cm) at its widest point, making it an elegant wrap suitable for layering or draping. The shawl grows from a single point toward the opposite side, creating a dynamic crescent or triangle silhouette as stitches increase throughout the pattern.
Knitting Techniques Used
This advanced knitting project employs several sophisticated techniques that elevate it beyond beginner-level work. The shawl incorporates beadwork integration, where seed beads are incorporated directly into the knitted fabric to create visual interest and texture. The design features a beaded edge that adds embellishment and definition to the finished piece. Knitters will work with yarn overs and decreases to create lace-like elements and shaping. The pattern uses circular needles to manage the increasing number of stitches as the shawl expands from its starting point. Blocking is essential to achieve the correct finished dimensions and to set the gauge and drape of the completed shawl.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Crystal Twist Shawl utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined in strategic ways. Stockinette Stitch forms the primary fabric base and is used to measure gauge at 24 stitches by 37 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) after blocking. The pattern incorporates knit front and back (kfb) increases to add stitches and shape the shawl's growth. Knit two together (k2tog) decreases and yarn overs (yo) create decorative lace elements and contribute to the shaping. Purl stitches (p2) are used to create textural contrast and definition, particularly in edge sections. These stitches work together to build the asymmetrical triangle form while maintaining visual interest throughout the design.
Materials and Specifications
The Crystal Twist Shawl requires approximately 100 grams of fingering weight yarn, which equates to roughly 400 yards (366 meters) of yardage. The sample shown in the pattern was knitted using Ontheround Everyday Fingering yarn in the colorway Vineyard, which provides 425 yards (388 meters) per 100 grams and is composed of 100% superwash merino fiber for durability and easy care. Knitters will need US size 3 / 3.25 mm circular needles measuring at least 24 inches (60 cm) in length, though longer needles may be preferred as the shawl expands. Additional notions include a cable needle, stitch markers, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and 40 grams of Size 6/0 Miyuki seed beads in the Green-lined Chartreuse AB colorway for beadwork embellishment. While exact gauge is not critical to the success of the project, variations in gauge will affect both the final dimensions of the shawl and the total yardage required.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as advanced, making it suitable for experienced knitters who are comfortable with complex stitch patterns, bead integration, and shaping techniques. The combination of lace elements, beadwork, and asymmetrical construction requires strong foundational knitting skills and the ability to read and follow detailed pattern instructions.
