Product Description
If you’ve been seeking a new adventure in stranded knitting, then look no further! The Crystal Thaw Pullover uses a combination of stranded colourwork and woven stitches, for a stunning effect that is sure to intrigue your knitting friends.
There’s something really special about a handknit pullover with a stranded yoke. Challenge yourself with a new woven stitch technique and enjoy the play of both flat and textured contrast colour. The woven stitches float above the fabric, whereas the stranded knitting motifs appear more solid. The ice crystal effect reminds me of winter melting into spring.
If you want to try out a smaller design using woven stitches, check out my Quince Blossom Cowl.
The pullover is worked seamlessly in a single piece, in the round from the top down. It is designed to fit with 1-1.5” / 3-6cm positive ease at bust. Sample shown in size S. The pattern includes a full schematic. Pattern measurements are given in cm.
Crystal Thaw Jumper by Sophie McKane
What is Being Made
The Crystal Thaw Jumper is a knitted sweater designed by Sophie McKane for Unicorn Designs. This pullover jumper is available in nine sizes ranging from XS through 5X, offering inclusive sizing options. The garment is designed with 3cm to 6cm positive ease at the bust, providing a comfortable, relaxed fit suitable for various body types and layering preferences.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques common to modern sweater construction. The jumper is worked in the round using circular needles, which creates seamless fabric and reduces finishing work. Sleeve shaping is accomplished using double-pointed needles (DPNs) or the preferred method for working small circumferences in the round. The pattern incorporates stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping increases or decreases. Waste yarn is used during construction, likely for provisional cast-on or stitch holders, allowing for flexible finishing options.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The Crystal Thaw Jumper is worked primarily in stockinette stitch (St st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric with characteristic V-shaped columns. The pattern is measured over stockinette stitch in the round, with a tension of 22 stitches and 30 rows over 10 centimeters. This stitch gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements and fit outlined in the schematic provided with the pattern.
Yarn and Materials
Yarn: The pattern is designed for Rowan Alpaca Soft DK, a DK weight yarn with a fiber content of 70% wool and 30% alpaca. Each ball contains 125 meters and weighs 50 grams. Yarn requirements vary by size: the main color (MC) requires between 875 and 1,750 meters depending on size, while the contrast color (CC) requires between 125 and 250 meters. The pattern is shown in Rowan Alpaca Soft DK colorway 207 Mulberry for the main color and 210 Rainy Day for the contrast color.
Needles and Notions: Construction requires US 6/4mm circular needles in both 12-inch (30cm) and 24-inch (60cm) lengths for working different sections of the garment. US 6/4mm double-pointed needles are needed for sleeve shaping, or alternatively any DK weight yarn can be used with preferred small-circumference knitting methods. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, three stitch markers for tracking pattern sections, and waste yarn for provisional techniques.
