Product Description
ALL MY PATTERNS ARE ON SALE 1/2 OFF THROUGH 12/31/2014! HAPPY KNITTING ! ! ! No coupon needed.
The Crossings Sweater is constructed Top Down and Seamless in the Round. Although it begins by working only the back, stitches for the front are then picked up from the cast on row from the back and when the bottom of the armhole is reached the sweater is knit in the round from that point. Sleeves are set in using short rows then knit in the round so they are also seamless.
Techniques required to complete this sweater are: basic knit and purl stitches, casting on and binding off, knitting in the round, increases and decreases, short rows, and simple cabling. The recommended bind off for this pattern is Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off, which is well described in a Knitty article online: http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall09/FEATjssbo.php, however, other bind off methods can be substituted if desired.
Size 6 needles in 40" or longer circular is recommended.
Crossings – Child Size Sweater by Strings of Serendipity
What is Being Made
The Crossings is a child-sized knitted sweater designed by Tricia Perkins of Strings of Serendipity. This pattern is available in five child sizes: 6, 8, 10-12, 14, and 16, with finished chest circumferences ranging from 26 inches (66 cm) to 34 inches (86.5 cm). The sweater is ideal for knitters seeking a beginner-friendly project with seamless construction and modern design elements.
Construction Method
The Crossings sweater is constructed using a top-down, seamless-in-the-round approach, which minimizes finishing work and creates a polished final garment. Construction begins by working only the back panel. Stitches for the front are then picked up from the cast-on row of the back piece. Once the knitter reaches the bottom of the armhole, the entire sweater transitions to knitting in the round, creating a continuous tube. The sleeves are set in using short-row shaping and are also knit in the round, ensuring they are completely seamless.
Stitches and Techniques Used
This beginner-level pattern requires knowledge of fundamental knitting techniques, making it an excellent choice for knitters developing their skills:
- Basic knit and purl stitches
- Casting on and binding off
- Knitting in the round
- Increases and decreases for shaping
- Short rows for sleeve cap shaping
- Simple cabling for textural interest
Materials and Gauge
The Crossings is designed to be worked with worsted-weight yarn on US size 6 needles using 60-inch circular needles (80 cm). The recommended gauge is 20 stitches by 28 rows over 4 inches when worked on the specified needles. The pattern calls for Cascade 220 Superwash yarn in Midnight Heather. Yardage requirements vary by size: size 6 requires 440 yards (402 m), size 8 requires 560 yards (512 m), size 10-12 requires 670 yards (613 m), size 14 requires 800 yards (732 m), and size 16 requires 920 yards (841 m).
Skill Level
Rated as a beginner difficulty pattern, the Crossings sweater provides an accessible introduction to seamless, top-down knitting while incorporating classic techniques like short rows and simple cabling. The straightforward construction method and fundamental stitch requirements make this an ideal project for knitters building confidence in their craft.
