Product Description

(VF incluse)

What’s this: This is the crossed-stripes dishcloth, designed as a square for the 2020 Moogly CAL.

Why should I make this: Dishcloths are my go-to project when I have an itch to crochet, but 0 motivation. Luckily, they’re super useful for my home, or to give as gifts.

When will this get the most use: Got dishes to do? Homes to warm? There you go.

Who is it for: Everybody who has dishes to do or counters to wipe.

Where do I start: This pattern is rated Easy - you’ll need to know or be eager to learn the basic crochet stitches and colour changing. You will need 50 g of worsted weight cotton in each of 2 colours + a 6 mm hook. Other notions: a yarn needle and some stitch markers.

Feedback is always welcome and I hope to see your projects!

Crossed-Stripes Crochet Dishcloth by ACCROchet

What Is Being Made

This is a crochet dishcloth featuring a distinctive crossed-stripes pattern. The finished dishcloth measures approximately 12 inches (30 cm) on each side, making it a practical kitchen textile suitable for everyday use. The design combines two contrasting colors to create visual interest through its unique stitch construction.

Craft and Technique Overview

This project uses crochet as the primary construction method. The crossed-stripes effect is achieved through a clever stitch manipulation technique where stitches are skipped and then worked into from the front, creating an interlocking visual pattern. This technique adds depth and texture to what would otherwise be a simple fabric, making it an excellent beginner-friendly introduction to more advanced stitch work.

Stitches Used

  • Chain (ch) – Used to create the foundation of 33 chains
  • Single crochet (sc) – Creates a tight, dense fabric in alternating rows
  • Double crochet (dc) – Used in the pattern rows to build height and create the crossed-stripe effect
  • Half-double crochet (hdc) – Listed in the stitch guide for reference

Pattern Construction

The dishcloth begins with a foundation chain of 33 stitches. Row 1 establishes the base using single crochet stitches across the entire chain. Row 2 introduces the signature crossed-stripes technique: after chaining 2 and working a double crochet in the same stitch, the pattern repeats a sequence of skipping one stitch, working double crochets in the next two stitches, then working a double crochet in the previously skipped stitch. This skip-and-work-forward technique is repeated 10 times across the row, creating the distinctive crossed effect. Row 3 returns to single crochet across all stitches, allowing the pattern to reset for subsequent repeats.

Materials and Yarn

This pattern calls for Bernat Handicrafter 100% cotton yarn in worsted weight. You will need 1 ball each of 2 different colors (the example shown uses Jute and Emerald). Each ball contains 50 grams and yields 80 yards (73 meters) of yarn, providing ample yardage for the finished 12-inch dishcloth.

Tools and Notions

  • 6 mm crochet hook – or the size needed to work tightly but comfortably with your chosen cotton yarn
  • Yarn needle – for weaving in ends and finishing
  • Stitch markers – helpful for tracking pattern repeats and row beginnings

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 13 stitches by 9 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) when worked in pattern. Checking gauge before beginning ensures your finished dishcloth will be the intended size. If your gauge differs, adjust your hook size accordingly—use a smaller hook if your fabric is too loose, or a larger hook if it is too tight. The finished dishcloth measures approximately 12 inches (30 cm) on all sides.

Difficulty Level

This project is rated as beginner difficulty, making it accessible to crocheters new to the craft. While it introduces the intermediate technique of working into skipped stitches to create crossed effects, the overall structure remains straightforward with only three basic stitches and a simple three-row repeat pattern.
