Product Description

Crocodilian is a Shawlette in two sizes, it is knit from tip to tip and the pattern is created using fairly simple lace techniques. Knit in cotton, bamboo or silk for a lightweight floaty shawlette or a wool for a heavier warm scarf.

The pattern is easily memorised and would be a great pattern for a beginner wanting to tackle a shawl pattern or an easy no-think knit for a more experienced knitter.

Crocodilian Shawlette by Kiri FitzGerald

What is Being Made

The Crocodilian Shawlette is a lightweight triangular wrap designed in two sizes by independent designer Kiri FitzGerald. Named for its distinctive diamond pattern that resembles crocodile scales, this shawlette is worked from tip to tip, creating an elegant accessory suitable for various seasons depending on fiber choice. The small size features a top edge of 177cm (70 inches) with a widest point of 26cm (11 inches), while the large size offers a top edge of 224cm (89 inches) with a widest point of 30.5cm (12 inches).

Techniques and Construction

This intermediate-level knitting project employs fairly simple lace knitting techniques to achieve its signature visual appeal. The shawlette is constructed using a tip-to-tip method, which creates the triangular silhouette characteristic of this style. The lace pattern is built through strategic increases and decreases that form the diamond motif throughout the piece. The design is versatile in fiber content: knitting the shawlette in cotton, bamboo, or silk creates a lightweight and floaty garment ideal for warmer weather, while wool yarn produces a heavier, warmer scarf suitable for cooler seasons.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (k) – the fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
  • Knit 2 Together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used to shape the lace pattern
  • Knit Front and Back (kf&b) – an increase stitch that creates new stitches for shaping and pattern development
  • Stocking Stitch – the primary stitch pattern used throughout, providing the smooth fabric base for the lace design

Materials and Tools Required

Yarn: The pattern calls for 4-ply or sock weight yarn. The small size requires approximately 400 yards (370 meters), while the large size needs 560 yards (510 meters). The sample was knit in Three Irish Girls Bamboo Cotton Fingering in the colorway In The Buff for the small version, using approximately 328 yards (300 meters), and Three Irish Girls Springvale Sock in Eilis for the large version.

Needles and Tools: A 3.75mm knitting needle is required for this project. Additional tools include a stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats and a darning needle for weaving in ends upon completion.

Tension: The pattern specifies a tension of 34 rows by 23 stitches over 10cm (4 inches) when knit in stocking stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.
