Product Description
I originally designed this pattern with Malabrigo's Mecha yarn. It's a lovely bulky single-ply pure merino superwash wool that is so soft and coxy. The color, Arco Iris, is simply gorgeous and it reminds me of beautiful stained glass windows or a mosaic of colorful glass. It's what inspired the name, Tesserae is a small block of tile or glass used in making mosaics.
I imagine you could make this in any bulky weight yarn keeping in mind that Mecha has a slight thick-and-thin texture. Use a weight of yarn of your choice that will work up well in the gauge listed. That will ensure the consistency of your cowl.
Enjoy, stay warm, and crochet a little sunnshyne!
Tesserae Mosaic Cowl by Victoria Gottschalk
Project Overview
The Tesserae Mosaic Cowl is a beginner-friendly crochet cowl pattern designed to showcase a vibrant rainbow of color. This downloadable PDF pattern from designer Victoria Gottschalk of Crochet Sunnshyne creates a cozy, warm neckwear piece that celebrates colorwork in crochet.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a crochet cowl—a tubular neckwear accessory worked in the round. The cowl is designed to be worn around the neck for warmth and comfort, with the mosaic colorwork creating visual interest through the interplay of multiple yarn colors.
Construction Method & Techniques
The Tesserae Mosaic Cowl is worked in the round, with each row joined together using slip stitches. The designer connects the last stitch of each round to the first stitch, creating a seamless tubular structure. This method of working in continuous rounds is a fundamental crochet technique that produces a cohesive, finished appearance without visible seams.
The pattern incorporates textured stitching techniques that create visual depth and interest while maintaining the visibility and vibrancy of the multiple colors used throughout the design. The mosaic colorwork approach allows the rainbow palette to shine without overwhelming the piece with overly complex stitch patterns.
Stitches Used
- Chain stitch — the foundation stitch for creating loops and building the structure
- Slip stitch — used to join rounds and create seamless connections between rows
- Single crochet — a fundamental stitch providing structure and density
- Herringbone half double crochet — creates the textured mosaic effect while maintaining color visibility
Materials & Yarn Weight
This pattern is designed for chunky weight yarn, which works up quickly and creates a substantial, warm cowl suitable for cold weather. The use of chunky yarn also makes this an excellent beginner project, as the larger stitches are easier to work with and the finished piece comes together rapidly. The pattern accommodates multiple yarn colors to achieve the rainbow mosaic effect, allowing crafters to select their preferred color combinations.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner pattern, the Tesserae Mosaic Cowl is accessible to crocheters new to the craft. The straightforward construction, simple stitch combinations, and chunky yarn weight make this an ideal project for building foundational crochet skills while creating a beautiful, wearable finished product.
