Product Description

This illusion knit is inspired by Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. When you look from directly in front you only see narrow stripes. The image appears when you look from the side.

The wall-hanging measures approximately 142cm by 56cm using DK yarn and 3.25 mm needles and uses around 600 metres (660 yards) in each of two contrasting colours. Approximately 300 metres (330 yards) extra is needed for the border. Using a different yarn would change the overall size.

The pattern also includes instructions for making a triangular shawl. There are several different version of the charts including some for users of mobile devices.

One of the photos shows my original hanging when it was on display, above a fireplace, at Haworth Art Gallery, Accrington (UK)

What is Being Made

This downloadable knitting pattern creates an illusion knitting piece inspired by Michelangelo's iconic fresco The Creation of Adam from the Sistine Chapel ceiling (painted circa 1512). The design captures the instantly recognizable near-touching hands from the center of this masterpiece. The pattern offers two format options: a triangular shawl or a rectangular wall-hanging that can also be worn as a shawl, allowing crafters to choose their preferred finished piece.

Techniques and Stitches Used

This project employs illusion knitting, a sophisticated technique that creates a hidden image or pattern that becomes visible only when the finished piece is viewed from a specific angle or distance. This advanced visual effect transforms flat knitted fabric into a dimensional representation of the famous artwork. The pattern includes instructions for constructing the main body of the piece as well as detailed border finishing techniques to frame and complete the illusion effect.

Materials Required

Yarn: The project uses DK weight yarn in multiple colors to create the illusion effect. For the triangular shawl version, approximately 520 metres (570 yards) of each color is needed for the main body, with an additional 150 metres of one color for the border. For the rectangular wall-hanging version, approximately 600 metres (660 yards) of each color is required for the main body, with approximately 300 metres of one color for the border.

Needles and Tools: While specific needle sizes are not detailed in the provided content, DK weight yarn typically pairs with needles in the US 3-6 range, though the exact specifications are included in the full pattern instructions.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore more complex techniques. The illusion knitting method and multi-color construction require attention to detail and understanding of how color placement creates the final visual effect, but the pattern provides comprehensive guidance for successful completion.
