Product Description

Please note that this pattern has been written in US terminology.

I have made my collars using Lily’s Sugar’n Cream Aran cotton.. I have used a 5mm crochet hook but you can go up to a 5.5mm if using this yarn. Otherwise please follow hook size indicated in the band of your chose yarn for this project. (Personally I find this Aran a little thicker than other Arans)

This Collar is a great way to jazz up any outfit for all occasions. Another option can be to sew onto clothes and even baby vests. Add some ties, tassels or even Pom poms to really bring it to life.

Cotton Peter Pan Collar by Sam Hermes

What is Being Made

This is a crocheted cotton collar designed by Sam Hermes of Little Bud Creations. The Peter Pan collar is a decorative neckwear piece that drapes elegantly around the neck, featuring a shell stitch pattern that creates a delicate, ruffled appearance. This jewellery-style accessory adds a vintage-inspired touch to any outfit and is suitable for crafters of all skill levels.

Craft and Technique

This project uses the crochet technique throughout. The pattern is written in US crochet terminology, making it accessible to English-speaking crocheters. The collar is constructed by chaining a foundation length customized to individual neck measurements, then working in repeating rows to build the shell stitch pattern. The design allows for easy customization—crafters simply adjust their initial chain length in multiples of 4 stitches to achieve their desired collar size, with each additional shell adding approximately one inch to the finished circumference.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch featured in this pattern is the shell stitch, which creates the signature ruffled, decorative edge characteristic of Peter Pan collars. The pattern begins with a foundation chain and builds upon this base using shell stitch repeats. Working in multiples of 4 ensures proper stitch alignment and consistent shell formation throughout the piece.

Materials

  • Yarn: Aran weight cotton yarn (worsted weight). The designer specifically used Lily's Sugarʼn Cream Aran cotton for the pictured samples
  • Crochet Hook: 5mm or 5.5mm crochet hook, depending on yarn choice. The designer recommends following the hook size indicated on your chosen yarn's band for best results
  • Yarn Weight Classification: Worsted weight, suitable for creating a structured yet flexible collar that maintains its shape

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for new crocheters or those looking for a quick, rewarding project. The straightforward shell stitch and customizable sizing mean crafters can complete their collar without advanced techniques.

Sizing and Customization

The collar length is fully customizable to fit individual neck measurements. The pattern provides clear guidelines for adjusting size: a chain of 49 stitches creates approximately 16 inches with 12 shells, while adding 4 additional chain stitches adds one shell and approximately one inch to the finished circumference. Examples include Ch53 for 13 shells and Ch57 for 14 shells, allowing crafters to achieve a perfect, comfortable fit with a 2-centimeter gap at closure.
