Product Description
Corazona is a radiating lace shawl with a hint of texture to add depth. It uses a top down semicircular expanding wedge construction that can be adjusted to include extra wedges.
The size of the shawl can be adjusted in several ways - made smaller by skipping some rows and/or using the early ending, or made larger by adding an extra wedge.
The design suits lace to fingering yarn, in solid, semi-solid, gradient or subtle speckle varieties.
The size and shape of the shawl are both somewhat adaptable..
Suits lace to fingering weight yarn in any yardage between approx 500m and 1000m, or more if adding extra wedges. (If you really want to add an extra layer of zigzags, pm me and I’ll mock up a chart.)
Wrong side rows are mostly purl with the odd knit column.
The design can be worked entirely from the written pattern, or from charts with some notes.
In the wake of the Coronavirus, this pattern has been extended (up to 346 rows, charts only) for those in need of a marathon knit.
Corazona Radiating Lace Shawl by Nim Teasdale
What is Being Made
Corazona is a radiating expanding lace shawl designed by independent designer Nim Teasdale. The shawl features a distinctive corona-like radiation pattern that expands outward from the center, inspired by the interplay between the visual concept of light radiating around a bright source and the Spanish word "corazon" (heart). The design incorporates a hint of texture alongside the lace elements to add visual depth and interest to the finished piece.
Design Concept and Inspiration
The name Corazona emerged from the designer's meditation on how the human heart could radiate love like a corona, and how making kindness and its impact more visible might change how we approach life. This philosophical inspiration is woven into the structure of the shawl itself, creating a garment with meaningful design intent beyond its technical construction.
Knitting Techniques Used
Corazona employs lace knitting as its primary technique, with the shawl expanding radially outward from a center point. The pattern incorporates texture stitches alongside the lace elements to create depth and visual interest. The shawl is constructed using a wedge-based expansion method, allowing for significant customization of the final size.
Customization and Sizing Options
The Corazona pattern offers multiple ways to adjust the finished size:
- Create a smaller shawl by skipping certain rows and/or using an early ending option
- Create a larger shawl by adding an extra wedge to the radiating pattern
- Extend the pattern further using additional wedges for maximum yardage usage
Yardage Requirements
Corazona requires a minimum of approximately 500 meters (550 yards) of lace to fingering weight yarn for the smallest version. The pattern can be extended to use up to 950 meters (1,038 yards) or more when incorporating extra wedges or using the extension options. The pictured sample shawl used 785 meters (860 yards) of The Blue Brick Manitoulin Sparkl yarn.
Yarn Weight and Materials
Corazona is designed to work with 3-ply, 4-ply, and sport weight yarns. The gauge and needle size will vary depending on which yarn weight is selected for the project. The flexible yardage requirements mean the pattern accommodates a range of yarn weights within the specified categories, making it adaptable to different yarn stash options.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, suitable for knitters with experience in lace knitting techniques and comfortable reading and following more complex stitch patterns.
Pattern Format
Corazona is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, making it accessible for immediate use once purchased.
