Cooper Knitting Pattern by Ruth Garcia-Alcantud

Project Overview

Cooper is a versatile knitting pattern collection designed by Ruth Garcia-Alcantud that includes three coordinating projects: cowls, hats, and mittens. This intermediate-level pattern is worked in chunky weight yarn, making it an accessible project for knitters with some experience who want to create quick, satisfying garments. The collection showcases the designer's creative vision with the intriguing reference "because the owls are not what they seem," suggesting thoughtful design details throughout.

What Is Being Made

  • Cowl: A neck warmer measuring 30cm x 140cm (12 inches x 55 inches) after blocking, providing generous length for versatile styling options
  • Hat (Beret): A structured hat worked in the round for a classic, fitted silhouette
  • Mittens: Hand coverings constructed with a gusset thumb for improved fit and comfort

Construction Techniques

All three projects in the Cooper collection are worked in the round, creating seamless garments with continuous circular knitting. This technique eliminates the need for seaming and produces a polished, professional finish. The mittens feature a provisional cast on for the thumb gusset, a technique that allows knitters to pick up stitches later and create an invisible join. This method results in a smooth, comfortable transition where the thumb meets the hand.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The Cooper pattern employs a range of fundamental and decorative knitting stitches to create visual interest and texture:

  • Knit (K) and Purl (P): Basic stitches forming the foundation of the fabric
  • Cable stitches: C4F (cable 4 front) and C4B (cable 4 back) create the dimensional cable details that likely inspire the design's name and visual character
  • Decreases: ssk (slip, slip, knit), k2tog (knit 2 together), and s2k1psso (slip 2 stitches together as if to knit, knit 1, pass both slipped stitches over) for shaping and stitch reduction
  • Yarn overs (yo): Create decorative holes and lace-like details
  • Make 1 (m1): An increase worked by lifting the strand between stitches, used for seamless shaping
  • Purl 2 together (p2tog): A decrease on the purl side for shaping

Yarn and Materials

The Cooper pattern requires 330 meters of chunky weight yarn, making it a relatively quick project despite the three different garments. The sample was knitted using Katia Peru, a chunky weight yarn, with 3 skeins of 110m per 100g each providing the necessary yardage. Chunky weight yarn works up quickly on larger needles, making this an ideal pattern for knitters seeking fast results without sacrificing design complexity.

Additional materials needed include waste yarn for the provisional cast on, stitch markers to track pattern repeats and construction points, stitch holders for temporarily securing stitches, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and any finishing work.

Needles and Gauge

The Cooper pattern uses different needle sizes for different projects to achieve appropriate fabric density:

  • Beret and Cowl: Size 8mm / US 11 circular needles or double-pointed needles (dpns), with a gauge of 1 cable repeat = 2.5 inches / 6.4 centimeters
  • Mittens: Size 7mm circular needles or dpns, with a gauge of 1 cable repeat = 2 inches / 5 centimeters

The pattern emphasizes using needles that will achieve the desired gauge, as this directly affects finished size and fit. Gauge swatching is particularly important for mittens, where accurate sizing ensures proper hand coverage and comfort.

Difficulty Level and Skill Requirements

Rated as intermediate, the Cooper pattern assumes knitters are comfortable with circular knitting in the round, can read knitting charts or written instructions, and have experience with cable stitches and basic sh
