Product Description

This is a very easy knitted cowl you can wear numerous ways...scrunched up, narrow end up, wide end up, folded over either end! This is appropriate for new knitters, but you must know how to knit in the round. This was used as a workshop pattern in my shop and was a big success! Jojoland Rhythm is so much fun to knit with - always changing color and a great weight! This cowl works up quickly on size US 8 needles (the size 9 needle is just for casting on and binding off.)

What Is Being Made

The Convertible Cowl (K172) is a versatile neck accessory designed to fit children through adults. This knitted cowl measures approximately 8 inches wide at its thinnest point and 14 inches wide at its thickest point, with a height of 8 3/4 inches when flattened and unstretched. The convertible design allows the wearer to style the cowl in multiple ways, making it a flexible addition to any wardrobe.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This intermediate-level knitting project is worked in the round using circular knitting needles, which creates a seamless tubular fabric. The cowl is constructed beginning at the wide end, allowing the knitter to build the piece with gradual shaping. The use of circular needles eliminates the need for seaming and creates a continuous, smooth fabric that drapes elegantly around the neck.

Stitches Used

The Convertible Cowl employs fundamental knitting stitches suitable for intermediate crafters:

  • Stockinette stitch — the primary stitch pattern, created by alternating knit and purl rounds to produce a smooth, classic fabric with a distinctive V-pattern texture
  • Knit stitches (K) — the basic foundation stitch used throughout the project
  • Purl stitches (P) — used in combination with knit stitches to create stockinette stitch in the round
  • Decreases (K2tog and P2tog) — knit 2 together and purl 2 together decreases are used to shape the cowl and create its distinctive convertible silhouette

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern calls for approximately two skeins of Jojoland "Rhythm" yarn in color M17. This yarn is 100% wool, offering warmth and elasticity ideal for a neck cowl. Each skein contains 110 yards and weighs 1.76 ounces, providing sufficient yardage for the complete project. The worsted weight yarn creates a fabric with good drape and structure.

Needles and Notions

The project requires a 16-inch Size US 8 circular knitting needle as the primary tool for working the cowl in the round. An additional Size US 9 knitting needle is used solely for the bind-off process, creating a slightly looser edge that enhances the finished garment's flexibility and comfort. A stitch marker helps track the beginning of each round, and a yarn needle or large embroidery needle is needed for weaving in yarn ends.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern establishes a gauge of 5 stitches and 6.5 rows per 1 inch in stockinette stitch using Size US 8 circular knitting needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for the cowl to fit properly across the range of sizes from child to adult. The convertible design accommodates various neck sizes through its unique shaping, making it a practical one-size-fits-most accessory.

Pattern Format

The Convertible Cowl is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, making it convenient for digital access and printing. The pattern includes comprehensive abbreviations and clear directional instructions, designed to guide intermediate knitters through the project successfully.
