Columns with Shells Scarf Crochet Pattern

What Is Being Made

The Columns with Shells Scarf is an unisex crochet scarf designed by Marie Segares and published by Underground Crafter. This finished accessory measures 6 inches wide by 70 inches long (15 cm x 178 cm), making it an ideal length and width for adult wear. The scarf is specifically engineered to provide protection against harsh winds during late fall and winter months, combining both functionality and visual appeal through its textured construction.

Techniques and Construction

This crochet pattern employs a combination of post stitches and shell stitches to create dimensional texture and visual interest. The design utilizes back post triple crochet and front post triple crochet techniques, which are worked around the posts of previous stitches rather than into the tops of stitches. These post stitch variations create raised, textured columns that run vertically through the fabric. The pattern also incorporates shell stitch elements, which add decorative scalloped edges and additional surface dimension to the finished piece.

The scarf works up quickly due to the use of super bulky weight yarn combined with beginner-friendly crochet techniques. The pattern is suitable for crocheters with beginner-level skills, making it an accessible project for those new to the craft while still producing a professionally finished garment.

Stitches Used

  • Chain (ch) – the foundation stitch used to create the base of the pattern
  • Single crochet (sc) – a basic short stitch used for structure and shaping
  • Half double crochet (hdc) – a medium-height stitch providing balanced fabric density
  • Double crochet (dc) – a taller stitch used throughout the main pattern repeat
  • Back post triple crochet (BPtr) – worked around the back post of previous stitches to create raised textured columns
  • Front post triple crochet (FPtr) – worked around the front post of previous stitches for dimensional effect
  • Double crochet 2 together (dc2tog) – a decrease stitch used to shape and control fabric width

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This pattern calls for super bulky weight yarn, specifically Lion Brand Wool-Ease® Thick and Quick® in the colorway Cilantro (640-178). The yarn composition is 80% acrylic and 20% wool, providing a blend of durability and warmth. Three skeins are required, totaling approximately 320 yards (293 meters) of yarn. Each skein contains 6 ounces (170 grams) and 106 yards (97 meters).

A K-10.5 (6.5 mm) crochet hook is recommended, though the pattern notes that any hook size may be used as long as the correct gauge is achieved. A yarn needle is also required for weaving in ends upon completion. The gauge should be checked by working through Row 5 of the pattern; the swatch should measure 6 inches (15 cm) across the width to ensure proper finished dimensions and fit.
