Cocoon Man's Sweater by Anni Howard

What is Being Made

The Cocoon man's sweater is a classic pullover design created by independent designer Anni Howard. This garment is a versatile, everyday sweater suitable for men, available in five graduated sizes to fit chest measurements ranging from 86 cm to 132 cm (34 to 52 inches). The finished length varies from 70 cm to 76 cm (27½ to 30 inches) depending on size, with sleeve length options between 51 cm and 53 cm (20 to 21 inches).

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This intermediate-level knitting project employs fundamental sweater construction methods. The sweater begins with a ribbed cuff worked in a 2x2 rib pattern, which provides elasticity and helps the garment sit comfortably at the wrists. The ribbing is worked over approximately 9 cm (3½ inches) before transitioning into stockinette stitch for the main body. The pattern includes strategic decreasing across the transition row to achieve the correct stitch count for the body section, demonstrating basic shaping techniques appropriate for intermediate knitters.

Stitches Used

  • 2x2 Ribbing: Alternating knit and purl stitches in a 2-stitch repeat pattern, used for the cuff to create stretch and definition
  • Stockinette Stitch (st st): The primary stitch used for the body of the sweater, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side, producing a smooth, classic fabric

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Cocoon man's sweater is designed to be knitted in Rowan Cocoon yarn in the shade Mountain 805. The yarn weight is chunky, which creates a substantial, warm fabric suitable for cooler weather. Depending on the size selected, the pattern requires between 11 and 16 balls of 100g yarn. The pattern specifies that 7mm needles are used for construction. Knitters must achieve a tension of 14 stitches and 16 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) measured over stockinette stitch using 7mm needles to ensure the finished garment meets the specified measurements.

The pattern notes that alternative chunky weight yarns may be substituted, though yarn amounts may vary depending on the specific yarn's yardage. Knitters who tend to knit loosely should consider using smaller needles, while those who knit more tightly should use larger needles, as achieving the correct tension is emphasized as important for proper garment fit.

Excellent.

Lovely pattern, but definitely knits up big. I looked at the actual size and then compared it to one of my husband's sweaters to figure out which size to knit. The sleeves were a little too bulky for our liking, so I adjusted the pattern.
