Product Description

Aconcagua Clutch is a useful clutch made using tapestry crochet technique. The design comes from Aconcagua Culture that existed in the central region of Chile between IX and XVC centuries a.C.

It is a simple design, easy to follow, you just need to know how to do a chain, slip stitch, and double crochet. It is written using US terms.

For the color change technique, I included pictures with instructions step by step to help you. Once you buy the pattern, you can contact me to share a video tutorial as well.

To make this pattern, you will need at least 50 gr of cotton of three colors: dark grey, light brown and rose; a 2.5 mm crochet hook or any smaller than suggested for your yarn; scissors, needle, and a zipper.

I hope you enjoy making this clutch full of meaning to me.

Hugs!

What is Being Made

The Clutch Aconcagua is a crocheted clutch bag inspired by the pottery of the Aconcagua Culture, ancestors who inhabited the basin of the Aconcagua river in the central zone of Chile between approximately the IX and XV centuries. The design features opposed triangle shapes that reflect the cultural concept of duality found in Aconcagua pottery, politics, social life, and rituals. This intermediate-level crochet project measures 21 cm wide by 15 cm in height and incorporates a functional zipper closure.

Design Inspiration and Cultural Context

The Aconcagua Clutch draws directly from archaeological pottery motifs, specifically the contrasting triangle decorations characteristic of Aconcagua vessels. The design philosophy centers on duality—a worldview reflected in the distribution and location of decorative patterns that consistently formed halves or opposing elements. This cultural aesthetic translates into the modern clutch through geometric crochet colorwork.

Crochet Techniques Used

This project employs tapestry crochet as its primary technique, a method that allows for intricate colorwork by carrying yarn inside stitches to create detailed patterns. The clutch is constructed in a tube shape, worked row by row following a chart in grid format. This approach enables the creation of the geometric triangle motifs inspired by Aconcagua pottery while maintaining structural integrity.

Stitches and Crochet Fundamentals

  • Chain stitch (ch) — used to establish foundation and foundation chains
  • Double crochet (dc) — the primary stitch for building the fabric and creating the tapestry crochet pattern
  • Slip stitch (sl st) — used for joining rounds and finishing edges

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Clutch Aconcagua is designed to work with 100% cotton yarn in a 6/4 weight, which falls within the sport to DK weight range. The pattern calls for three coordinating cotton colors:

  • Dark grey — 50 g
  • Light brown — 50 g
  • Light pink — 50 g

Cotton yarn is ideal for this project due to its durability, breathability, and crisp stitch definition, which showcases the geometric tapestry crochet pattern effectively. The clutch also requires a 20-25 cm zipper for closure.

Tools Required

  • Crochet hook — 2.5 mm size
  • Yarn needle — for weaving in ends and finishing
  • Stitch marker — optional, for tracking pattern repeats and round beginnings
  • Scissors — for cutting yarn

Pattern Format

This is a downloadable PDF pattern that includes a chart in grid format, allowing crocheters to follow the tapestry crochet design visually. The row-by-row construction method makes it accessible for intermediate-level crocheters who have experience with basic stitches and are ready to explore colorwork techniques.
