Product Description

Cloudesley is worked seamlessly from the top down using the contiguous set-in sleeve method (developed by Susie Myers) to shape the shoulders and sleeve caps. First increases are worked on both RS and WS rows to final shoulder width, while setting up the slip stitch pattern band for the back, then the sleeve caps are worked simultaneously with the V-Neck shaping to sleeve separation. Then the body is worked top down in rounds to the bottom, where a slip stitch pattern band is added to the front. Sleeves are worked top down in rounds. Neck finishing is worked last.

Option 1 (short sleeves) 722 (788, 897, 963, 1083)(1171, 1280, 1395, 1488) yds 660 (720, 820, 880, 990)(1070, 1170, 1275, 1360) m Option 2 (long sleeves) 1035 (1116, 1249, 1336, 1485)( 1606, 1755, 1899, 2018) yds 946 (1020, 1142, 1221, 1357)(1468, 1604, 1736, 1845) m

Cloudesley Knit Sweater by Isabell Kraemer

What is Being Made

Cloudesley is a handknit sweater design created by independent designer Isabell Kraemer. This downloadable PDF pattern offers a classic pullover sweater suitable for intermediate knitters. The design is available in two sleeve length options: short sleeves or long sleeves, allowing customization based on personal preference and seasonal needs.

Craft and Primary Technique

This is a knitting project worked primarily in the round, which creates seamless construction and efficient garment assembly. The pattern uses circular needles for most of the sweater body, a technique favored by many knitters for its comfort and the elimination of side seams.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used

Cloudesley features a decorative slip stitch pattern (SLST pattern) as its primary design element. The slip stitch pattern is worked over a multiple of 7 plus 3 stitches and repeats over 4 rounds:

  • Round 1: P1, (k1, sl1 wyib, k4, sl1 wyib) to 2 stitches before end, k1, p1
  • Round 2: Repeat Round 1
  • Round 3: P1, (k1, 1/2LC, 1/2RC) to 2 stitches before end, k1, p1
  • Round 4: P1, knit to 1 stitch before end, p1

The pattern incorporates cable techniques with left and right cable crosses (1/2LC and 1/2RC abbreviations), adding textural interest and visual dimension to the finished garment. Slip stitches worked with yarn in back (wyib) create a refined, sophisticated texture throughout the body of the sweater.

Materials and Yarn Weight

Cloudesley is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition and drape. The pattern accommodates multiple size options with varying yardage requirements.

Yarn Options:

  • WOF Yak Mix Fine: 400 yards (366 meters) per 100 grams, shown in Taupe colorway
  • ITO SHIMO: 291 yards (266 meters) per 50 grams, shown in Gray (#845) colorway

Yardage Requirements:

  • Option 1 (Short Sleeves): Approximately 766 to 1521 yards (700 to 1390 meters) depending on size
  • Option 2 (Long Sleeves): Approximately 1035 to 1877 yards (1120 to 1325 meters) depending on size

The pattern is worked with circular needles appropriate for the yarn weight, allowing for seamless in-the-round construction throughout the majority of the sweater.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience. The combination of slip stitch techniques, cable work, and in-the-round construction requires familiarity with these fundamental knitting methods, though the repetitive nature of the stitch pattern makes it accessible for those ready to advance beyond beginner projects.
