Cloud Bay Cardigan by Justyna Lorkowska

What is Being Made

Cloud Bay is a knitted cardigan designed by Justyna Lorkowska in collaboration with Mellifera Yarn. This open-front cardigan is crafted to be worn with approximately 2.5 cm (1 inch) of positive ease, creating a relaxed, comfortable fit. The design is available in six sizes ranging from XS to XXL, with finished chest measurements from 82 cm (32.75 inches) to 124 cm (49.5 inches).

Knitting Techniques and Construction

Cloud Bay employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The cardigan is constructed using circular needles in multiple sizes, allowing for seamless construction and the ability to work flat. The pattern utilizes stitch markers and stitch holders or scrap yarn to manage stitches during construction. A tapestry needle is required for weaving in ends during finishing.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch used throughout this cardigan is stockinette stitch (St st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a distinctive V-pattern appearance. Stockinette stitch is worked flat with the largest needles, forming the foundation of the garment's structure and drape.

Yarn and Materials

Cloud Bay is designed to be worked in Mellifera Cash DK, a luxury yarn blend consisting of 80% merino wool, 10% cashmere, and 10% nylon. This blend provides softness, breathability, and durability. The yarn is available in 100-gram skeins with 230 yards per skein. The sample shown is knitted in the Smoke colorway. Depending on size, the cardigan requires between 5 and 8 skeins of yarn.

Needles and Gauge

This project uses three different needle sizes to create shaping and stitch definition:

  • 4.0 mm / US #6 circular needle (80 cm / 32" length) and double-pointed needles for the main fabric
  • 3.75 mm / US #5 circular needle (80 cm / 32" length) and double-pointed needles for ribbing or shaping
  • 3.5 mm / US #4 circular needle (80 cm / 32" length) for finer details or edging

The gauge for this project is 20 stitches and 28 rows over 10 cm (4 inches) in stockinette stitch worked flat using the largest needles. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure proper fit and finished dimensions.

Difficulty Level

Cloud Bay is classified as a beginner-friendly knitting project, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to cardigan construction or those seeking to expand their skills with a manageable design.
