Product Description
The Cliff Climber Cowl was inspired by my love for beautiful mountain ranges. This cowl is knit with one skein of worsted yarn (weight 4), making it comfy and lightweight!
I used Malabrigo Rios, but any other worsted yarn is fine. I suggest using a solid color (or slightly tonal yarn) to highlight the stitch pattern, as opposed to a variegated yarn, which could detract from the stitch definition.
Skill Level: Advanced Beginner
Measurements: 11" across (width laid-flat) x 10" from cast-on edge to bind-off edge. 23" circumference.

Cliff Climber Cowl by Little Larkspur Designs
Project Overview
The Cliff Climber Cowl is a knitted cowl designed by Anna of Little Larkspur Designs, inspired by the beauty of mountain ranges. This beginner-friendly project creates a comfy, lightweight accessory using just one skein of worsted weight yarn. The design emphasizes simplicity and visual interest through strategic stitch techniques that evoke the look of mountain peaks and ridges.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a circular cowl—a tubular neckwear piece that can be worn as a cozy neck wrap or pulled up as a hood-like accessory. The finished cowl is designed to be lightweight and comfortable for everyday wear, making it an ideal project for knitters seeking a quick, satisfying make.
Techniques and Stitch Work
The Cliff Climber Cowl features twisted stitches as its primary design element. These twisted stitches create the visual effect of mountain ranges across the fabric, adding texture and dimension to the piece. The pattern uses fundamental knitting abbreviations including knit (K), purl (P), and left twist (LT) stitches. The left twist technique involves skipping the first stitch and knitting the second stitch through the back loop, creating a subtle diagonal line that contributes to the mountain-inspired aesthetic.
The cowl is worked in the round using circular needles, which allows for seamless construction and continuous stitch pattern development around the circumference of the piece.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This project requires worsted weight yarn (weight 4) in approximately 210 yards. The pattern suggests Malabrigo Rios as an ideal yarn choice, though any worsted weight yarn of comparable yardage will work. The designer recommends using solid-colored or slightly tonal yarns to maximize stitch definition and pattern visibility. Variegated or multi-colored yarns are discouraged, as they can obscure the twisted stitch details that create the mountain range effect.
Tools and Notions Required
- One stitch marker for tracking the beginning of rounds
- US 10 / 6mm circular knitting needle in 16-inch length for working the cowl in the round
Skill Level and Difficulty
While categorized as beginner-friendly, this pattern is specifically labeled as advanced beginner level. This designation suggests the project is accessible to knitters with foundational skills but includes techniques—such as twisted stitches—that require understanding of more nuanced stitch manipulation beyond basic knit and purl stitches.
Pattern Format
The Cliff Climber Cowl is available as a downloadable PDF pattern from Little Larkspur Designs. The pattern includes helpful hints and notes throughout the instructions, and the designer recommends reading the entire pattern before beginning to ensure familiarity with all techniques and construction methods.
