Product Description
This easy-to-knit scarf is knit up in garter stitch, on 4mm needles, and features classic color stripes in 100% merino, and a neat icord edge, which is surprisingly easy to create! I have also included a video tutorial for the tassels. It would be a great first project for a beginner knitter. The result is a cozy, stretchy and non-itchy scarf. Colors and yarn can be easily substituted.
Classic Schoolboy Scarf by Make One Knitwear
What is Being Made
The Classic Schoolboy Scarf is a beginner-friendly knitted scarf designed to keep children warm during cold winter days. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a finished scarf featuring uniform color stripes and decorative details that combine simplicity with a polished, professional appearance.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners while achieving sophisticated results. The scarf is knit flat on single-pointed needles, meaning you work back and forth in rows rather than in the round. The pattern features a distinctive double icord edge, a neat finishing technique that creates a refined border along the sides of the scarf. Striping is achieved through color changes at regular intervals, alternating between two yarn colors every 20 rows to create uniform, visually appealing stripes throughout the length of the scarf. Tassel embellishments are added to the ends for a classic schoolboy aesthetic, and these can be created using an optional tassel maker tool or by hand.
Stitches Used
- Garter Stitch: The primary stitch throughout the scarf, created by knitting every row. This fundamental stitch produces a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges and is ideal for beginners.
- Slip Stitch: Used in the edge technique (abbreviated as Sl2), where two stitches are slipped purlwise with yarn in front to create the neat double icord edge finish.
- Cast On and Bind Off: Essential foundation and finishing techniques used to begin and complete the scarf.
Materials and Specifications
The pattern calls for Plymouth Yarn Worsted Merino Superwash in two colors (color A and color B), providing a soft, washable wool yarn suitable for children's garments. The scarf is worked on US Size 6 (4mm) single-pointed needles, which are appropriately sized for the worsted weight yarn. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing, and an optional tassel maker to simplify the creation of tassel embellishments. The pattern specifies a gauge of 19 stitches and 34 rows to 4 inches (10cm) in garter stitch when using US size 6/4mm needles, ensuring consistent sizing and drape.
Pattern Details
The scarf is worked in one size, beginning with a cast-on of 24 stitches in color A. The pattern alternates between 20-row sections of color A and color B, maintaining the garter stitch throughout while slipping the final two stitches of each row to create the distinctive edge finish. This straightforward construction makes the pattern accessible to knitters of all skill levels, particularly beginners, while the color changes and edge technique add visual interest and a professional appearance suitable for a classic schoolboy aesthetic.
