Product Description

This Circle Scrubby is a delightful dish cleaner, and it works wonderfully for getting the hardest, stickiest bits of food off of everybody's plate.

The scrubby, if made of Red Heart Scrubby Cotton, might shrink the tiniest bit, but it should stay about the same size throughout many washes.

You will be able to make about three scrubbies per skein of scrubby yarn.

Gauge is not critical with this pattern, but you can use larger needles for a bigger scrubby or go down a needle size for a smaller scrubby.

You will also need:

4mm (US 6) straight knitting needles

a tapestry/yarn needle for seaming up

scissors

a couple of hours!

Circular Scrubby by Lizzie Rose Knits

What You'll Make

The Circular Scrubby is a practical, three-dimensional knitted cleaning tool designed for kitchen or bathroom use. This beginner-friendly project creates a single circular scrubby that can be completed in just a few hours, making it an ideal quick knit for crafters new to the medium or those seeking a satisfying, fast project.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners while creating an interesting dimensional shape. The scrubby is constructed using a strategic combination of increases and decreases that transform a flat knitted piece into a three-dimensional form. The pattern begins with a simple cast-on and progresses through alternating rows of increases and decreases to shape the fabric. Once the knitted piece reaches the appropriate size—when the cast-on edge and live stitches can be folded together to form a square-rectangle shape—all stitches are bound off. The final assembly involves seaming the bound-off edge to the cast-on edge, then seaming the top and bottom sections together while pulling the yarn tight to create the circular, dimensional structure.

Stitches Used

  • Cast-on: Long tail cast-on is recommended for this project
  • Knit stitch: The foundational stitch used throughout the pattern
  • Knit 2 together (k2tog): A decrease technique used to shape the scrubby
  • Knit front and back (kfb): An increase technique that adds stitches to create the dimensional shaping
  • Bind-off: Used to secure all stitches once the piece reaches the correct size

Materials Required

This project calls for specialized scrubby yarn designed for cleaning purposes. You'll need one skein of Red Heart Scrubby or Red Heart Scrubby Scrubby Cotton, which are textured yarns ideal for creating effective cleaning tools. The yarn weight is aran, which works well with 4mm straight knitting needles. Additional supplies include a tapestry or yarn needle for seaming the finished pieces together and scissors for cutting yarn.

Pattern Notes

The pattern recommends marking the first cast-on stitch to help with assembly and orientation. The designer notes that seaming can be challenging with this project, but the circular nature of the finished scrubby makes imperfect seams virtually invisible once the piece is assembled into its final three-dimensional form. This forgiving quality makes the pattern particularly suitable for beginners still developing their seaming skills.
