This Brioche Slouchy Hat is warm, squishy, and airy, knit in 3 colors. This tutorial will teach you to work my Shortcut Brioche stitch in the round. If you can work in the round and work “knit 1, purl 1” ribbing, you can knit this hat! There are no decreases at the crown, or anywhere in the pattern, it's just ribbing and Shortcut Brioche Stitch. I added a large pom pom at the back.
Chunky Brioche Slouch Hat by Yay For Yarn
What is Being Made
The Chunky Brioche Slouch Hat is a knitted hat featuring a relaxed, slouchy silhouette designed for a comfortable, laid-back fit. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Yay For Yarn creates a finished hat with a decorative pom pom topper, making it an ideal accessory project for those looking to add texture and visual interest to their wardrobe.
Skill Level and Difficulty
This pattern is rated as Advanced Beginner difficulty, making it accessible to knitters who have mastered fundamental techniques and are ready to explore more specialized stitch work. While the pattern introduces brioche knitting, the straightforward construction and clear instructions make it manageable for those progressing beyond basic knitting skills.
Knitting Techniques Used
The primary technique featured in this hat is brioche knitting, a specialized method that creates a distinctive textured, reversible fabric with excellent elasticity and visual appeal. Brioche knitting involves working yarn overs and decreases in a specific pattern to produce the characteristic brioche stitch look. The "shortcut" brioche method streamlines the traditional brioche process, reducing complexity while maintaining the beautiful aesthetic results. Additionally, the pattern incorporates circular knitting on 16-inch circular needles, which allows for seamless construction and even stitch distribution throughout the hat.
Stitches and Stitch Work
The brioche stitch forms the foundation of this design, creating a plush, textured fabric with pronounced vertical lines and dimensional depth. The pattern works with knit stitches combined with yarn overs and strategic decreases to build the brioche structure. Stitch markers are used throughout the pattern to help track pattern repeats and maintain consistent shaping as the hat progresses from the ribbed cuff to the slouchy body and crown shaping.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This pattern utilizes #4 Worsted Weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that creates a chunky, quick-knitting fabric perfect for a cozy slouch hat. The pattern is available in three sizes, each requiring approximately:
- 65 to 77 yards of Worsted Weight yarn in Color A (the primary color)
- 45 to 50 additional yards of Color A for the pom pom
- 65 to 77 yards of Worsted Weight yarn in Color B
- 65 to 77 yards of Worsted Weight yarn in Color C
The designer used Hobby Lobby "I Love This Wool" in the colorways Cocoa, Umber, and Ivory, demonstrating a sophisticated three-color combination that adds depth and visual interest to the finished hat. The worsted weight yarn creates a substantial, durable hat with excellent stitch definition.
Needles and Tools
The pattern requires two 16-inch circular knitting needles: a US size 9 (5.5 mm) needle for the ribbed cuff and a US size 10 (6.0 mm) needle for the main hat body. This needle progression allows for a snug, elastic cuff that transitions to a more relaxed, slouchy fabric in the crown. The pattern accommodates knitters with interchangeable circular needle systems, allowing flexibility in needle setup. Additional tools include scissors, a ruler, a yarn needle or blunt tapestry needle for weaving in ends, a stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats, and a large pom pom maker (approximately 3 3/8 inches in diameter) for creating a coordinating pom pom topper.
Pattern Summary
This downloadable PDF knitting pattern from Yay For Yarn offers a modern take on brioche knitting with its "shortcut" approach, making advanced techniques accessible to intermediate knitters. The combination of worsted weight yarn, circular needle construction, and brioche stitch techniques results in a textured, elastic hat with excellent shape retention and visual appeal. The three-color yarn requirements allow for creative color blocking or striping, while the included pom pom adds a playful finishing touch. Whether worked in the designer's suggested Hobby Lobby colorways or custom color combinations, this slouch hat pattern delivers a professional-looking, wearable accessory suitable for gifting or personal use.
