Product Description

I went through a phase when I was a child where I read a lot of Choose Your Own Adventure books. It would take me forever to finish one, as I would then retrace my steps through the book to make sure I had read every single possibility. Unlike the book versions, none of the choices in this pattern will result in serious bodily injury or death.

The sock is worked cuff down with mock cables and twisted stitch panels. The panels and mock cables are separated by purl stitches. Additional purl stitches may be added to increase the size, if needed.

The panel chart is composed of 8 sections. Answers to questions determine which section is worked. No socks will be the same.

Choose Your Own Adventure Socks by Kate Poe

What Is Being Made

These are interactive knitted socks designed for ladies in three sizes: Small (6.5 inches circumference), Medium (7.5 inches circumference), and Large (8.5 inches circumference). The socks feature a unique choose-your-own-adventure concept where knitters answer knitting-related questions to determine which twisted stitch pattern sections to work, creating personalized sock designs with multiple possible outcomes.

Design and Pattern Structure

The socks showcase panels of twisted stitches that are framed by mock cable details. The twisted stitch pattern comprises 8 different sections, with each section selected based on the knitter's answers to knitting-related questions throughout the pattern. This interactive approach transforms the sock knitting experience into a playful journey similar to the classic Choose Your Own Adventure books, though with outcomes limited to creative stitch variations rather than dramatic consequences.

The framing purl stitches can be added to increase the overall sock size if desired, providing flexibility for customization beyond the three standard sizes.

Techniques and Stitches Used

This intermediate-level sock pattern employs several key knitting techniques:

  • Twisted stitches: The primary decorative element, creating textured panels throughout the sock
  • Mock cables: Used to frame the twisted stitch sections, adding visual interest and structure without the complexity of true cable stitches
  • Right Twist (RT): A special stitch technique where the second stitch is knitted before the first stitch, creating the twisted texture
  • Stockinette stitch: The foundation stitch used for gauge measurement and likely for base sections of the sock
  • Purl stitches: Used for framing and sizing adjustments

Materials and Specifications

Yarn: Holiday Yarns Sock Flock, 1 skein containing 400 yards. This is fingering weight yarn with a fiber content of 75% merino wool and 25% nylon, weighing 100 grams per 400 yards. The merino provides softness and breathability while the nylon adds durability for sock wear.

Needles: US 1 (2.25mm) needles or the size needed to achieve proper gauge. The small needle size is typical for fingering weight sock knitting and creates the tight, elastic fabric required for well-fitting socks.

Gauge: 34 stitches and 48 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Achieving this gauge is essential for proper sock fit and circumference.

Additional supplies: 4 stitch markers are required to track pattern sections and construction points throughout the knitting process.

Yarn Weight Classification

This pattern uses 4-ply yarn in the fingering weight category, which is the standard weight for sock knitting. The 4-ply construction provides the necessary elasticity and durability for socks while maintaining a refined appearance and comfortable fit.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern requires knitters to be comfortable with basic sock construction, special stitches like the Right Twist, and the ability to follow branching pattern instructions based on their answers to the choose-your-own-adventure questions. Knitters should have experience reading charts or detailed stitch instructions and managing multiple pattern sections.
