Product Description
Child's Sweater with Relief Pattern in Schachenmayr Sun City – Pattern 6059
This free downloadable knitting pattern (No. 6059) from Schachenmayr produces a charming child's pullover sweater featuring a textured relief stitch pattern. The design is worked in Schachenmayr original Sun City yarn in three children's sizes — 92/98, 104/110, and 116/122 — making it a versatile project suitable for toddlers through early school-age children. The sweater combines a classic two-colour palette with a structured stitch band for visual interest, and finishes with a cosy roll neck collar.
What Is Being Made
The finished project is a children's pullover sweater knitted flat in separate pieces — a back, a front, and two sleeves — which are then seamed together. The sweater features a central band of relief or structural patterning worked across the body, set against a simpler background stitch. A roll-neck collar is picked up and worked in the round after assembly, adding a soft, casual finish well suited to children's knitwear. The front includes a shaped round neckline with gradual decreases for a neat, comfortable fit.
Yarn and Materials
- Yarn: Schachenmayr original Sun City — an aran-weight yarn used throughout the pattern
- Colour 00101 weiß (white): 300 g (size 92/98), 350 g (size 104/110), or 400 g (size 116/122) — used for the main body
- Colour 00265 pool: 50 g across all sizes — used for sleeve cuffs and the roll-neck collar. Note: the blue colour shown in the original photograph is no longer available; colour 00265 pool is offered as an alternative suggestion.
- Needles: Prym knitting needles and a double-pointed needle set (DPN set), size 3.5–4.5 mm
Techniques Used
- Flat knitting — the back, front, and sleeves are each worked back and forth in rows
- Knitting in the round — the roll-neck collar is picked up and worked in the round using a double-pointed needle set
- Sleeve shaping with increases — stitches are increased on both sides at regular intervals (every 6th and every 4th row) to create the sleeve taper
- Neckline shaping with decreases — the front neckline is formed by casting off the central stitches and then working stepped decreases on both sides every second row
- Seaming — shoulder seams are joined first, sleeves are sewn in, then sleeve and side seams are closed
- Blocking — finished pieces are pinned, dampened, and left to dry before assembly
- Two-colour knitting — the pool colourway is introduced for the sleeve cuffs and collar, with white used for the body and upper sleeves
Stitches Used
- Stocking stitch (glatt rechts / smooth right): Knit on right-side rows, purl on wrong-side rows — used as the main background fabric of the sweater body and sleeves. When working in the round, every round is knitted.
- Garter stitch (kraus rechts): Every row knitted — used within the relief pattern stripe and as an edging element. Garter stitch creates a ridged, textured surface that contrasts attractively with the smooth stocking stitch sections.
- Relief or structural pattern (Grundmuster / Strukturmuster): A combination of 2 stitches in stocking stitch and 2 stitches in garter stitch repeated across the row, with garter-stitch edge stitches at both sides. This rib-like textured pattern runs throughout the main body sections and creates the characteristic relief effect referenced in the pattern name.
- Pattern stripe (Musterstreifen): A 16-row decorative band worked across all stitches at a set
