Chevron & Broken Moss Stitch Sweater by Pat Menchini
What is Being Made
This is a knitted pullover sweater designed by Pat Menchini, available in six sizes ranging from 76–81 cm to 127–132 cm bust measurements. The garment features a sophisticated combination of two distinct stitch patterns: chevron and broken moss stitch. The sweater includes long sleeves with an adjustable length of 41 cm, and the body length ranges from 57 to 63 cm depending on size. This intermediate-level project is ideal for knitters seeking to expand their stitch pattern repertoire while creating a versatile, wearable garment.
Techniques Used
The Chevron & Broken Moss Stitch Sweater employs fundamental sweater construction techniques combined with decorative stitch patterning. Knitters will work with stitch holders during construction, suggesting the pattern involves shaping at the neckline and armholes. The design requires working with multiple needle sizes to achieve proper tension across different stitch patterns, demonstrating gauge management and the importance of tension swatching before beginning the main project. The sweater is constructed using standard knitting methods appropriate for intermediate-level crafters.
Stitches Used
- Chevron Stitch: A classic textured stitch pattern that creates a distinctive V-shaped or zigzag visual effect. This stitch is worked over a specific stitch and row count to achieve the proper chevron formation.
- Broken Moss Stitch: A variation of the traditional moss stitch that creates subtle texture and visual interest through alternating knit and purl stitches in a broken pattern sequence.
- Main Pattern: The primary stitch pattern used throughout much of the sweater body and sleeves.
Materials Required
This project uses Scheepjes Secret Garden, a DK weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition for displaying the chevron and broken moss stitch patterns. The yarn is available in the shade Herb Garden (color number 702). Yarn requirements vary by size, ranging from 8 to 10 balls of 50g each, with each ball containing 93 metres or 102 yards. The pattern requires three different sizes of knitting needles: 3.25 mm (UK 10/US 3), 4 mm (UK 8/US 6), and 4.5 mm (UK 7/US 7) needles. Additionally, two stitch holders are needed for managing stitches during construction. The DK weight yarn and needle sizes work together to create the specified tension of 18 stitches and 27 rows to 10 cm over the Main Pattern, and 19 stitches and 33 rows to 10 cm over the Chevron Pattern.
Difficulty Level
This sweater is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to work with multiple stitch patterns and garment shaping. The combination of chevron and broken moss stitches requires attention to stitch pattern instructions, while the sweater construction involves standard armhole and neckline shaping techniques.
