Product Description
All babies are cherubs aren't they?! These are so quick and easy to make that they would be a good pattern for a last minute baby shower gift.
These sweet bootees are knitted flat on two needles using DK/8 ply yarn. Wings are made separately and added to the back seam. There are instructions on how to do the 3 needle cast off seam on the sole.
There are 3 sizes. Sole measurements (unstretched) are: 7 cms/2.75”, 8 cms/3.25 “, 9.5 cms/3.75” This is approx amounts of DK/8 ply yarn needed for the 3 sizes: 30 (35, 40) gms; 60 (70, 80) m / 66 (77, 88) yds I used DK superwash wool but other soft wool-mix, cashmere or alpaca yarns would be fine too. 100% cotton may be a bit heavy for the wings to sit up though.
Cherub Bootees by Rian Anderson
What is Being Made
Cherub Bootees are charming knitted baby bootees designed for little angels aged 0 to 9 months. The pattern offers three sizes to accommodate growing infants: 0–3 months, 3–6 months, and 6–9 months. The bootee sole measurements range from 7 cms (2.75 inches) for the smallest size to 9.5 cms (3.75 inches) for the largest size. These sweet bootees feature decorative wings that are knitted separately and sewn to the back seam, adding an angelic touch to this practical footwear.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Cherub Bootees are knitted flat on two needles, making them an accessible project for intermediate knitters. The construction method involves working the main bootee pieces in stocking stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for baby garments. The pattern notes that tension can be tested as you knit by measuring the width after the first 12 rows, allowing adjustments before completing the entire piece. Wings are created as separate components and then attached to the back seam using a tapestry needle, combining multiple knitted elements into a finished design.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The primary stitch used throughout the Cherub Bootees is stocking stitch, which provides a smooth, refined finish suitable for delicate baby items. The pattern requires careful attention to gauge, with the target tension being 20 stitches and 27 rows to 10 centimeters when worked on 4 mm (US 6) needles using DK/8 ply yarn. This specific gauge ensures proper fit across all three sizes and maintains the intended proportions of the bootees and wings.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
Cherub Bootees are worked in DK/8 ply yarn, a medium-weight yarn that offers excellent drape and durability for baby garments. The yardage requirements vary by size:
- Size 0–3 months: 30 grams / 60 meters (66 yards)
- Size 3–6 months: 35 grams / 70 meters (77 yards)
- Size 6–9 months: 40 grams / 80 meters (88 yards)
The pattern requires one pair of 4 mm (US 6) needles for the main knitting, plus a slightly larger needle for casting off to ensure a neat, elastic edge. A tapestry needle is essential for seaming the bootee pieces together and attaching the separately knitted wings to the back seam.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, the Cherub Bootees pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle small-scale projects with multiple components. The straightforward stocking stitch construction and flat knitting method keep the pattern accessible, while the addition of separately made wings and the need for precise seaming provide a gentle challenge for developing seamstresses.
