Cherry Crochet Applique Pattern by Kerri's Crochet
What Is Being Made
The Cherry pattern is a crochet applique design that creates decorative cherry pairs suitable for embellishing garments, accessories, or craft projects. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Kerri's Crochet provides instructions for crafting realistic cherry appliques in three different size options, allowing crafters to customize their finished pieces based on yarn weight and hook size preferences.
Difficulty Level and Suitability
This pattern is classified as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for those new to crochet or looking to build foundational skills. The straightforward construction and basic stitch combinations create an accessible entry point into applique work while producing visually appealing results.
Stitches Used
The Cherry pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches that form the foundation of most crochet projects:
- Chain stitch (ch) - Used to establish the foundation and base rows of the pattern
- Treble crochet (tr) - Creates taller stitches that form the body and dimensional elements of the cherries
- Half treble crochet (htr) - Provides medium-height stitches for shaping and detail work
- Slip stitch (sl st) - Used for joining rounds and creating seamless transitions between sections
- Double crochet (dc) - Offers structural support and definition to the applique pieces
Techniques and Construction
The pattern utilizes row-based construction to build the cherry shapes. Each cherry is made as a pair (requiring two identical pieces to be crocheted), allowing for dimensional appliques that can be attached to larger projects. The use of slip stitches and varied stitch heights creates natural shaping and contours that give the cherries realistic proportions and visual appeal.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Cherry pattern offers flexibility in material selection, accommodating different yarn weights to achieve various finished sizes:
- Yarn Type: Crochet cotton or yarn in any thickness; the designer used Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush in Hot Red (color 115) for the cherry bodies and Grass Green (color 606) for the stems and leaves
- Yarn Weight: The pattern is designed for lace-weight and lighter yarns, with specific recommendations for 8 ply, 4 ply, and 2 ply crochet cotton depending on desired cherry size
- Hook Sizes: Crochet hooks ranging from 1mm to 3mm, matched to yarn weight for proper gauge and finished dimensions
- Additional Materials: A darning needle is required for weaving in yarn ends and finishing the appliques
Size Options
The pattern provides three scalable size variations to suit different project needs:
- Large Cherries: Measuring 8.5cm wide by 8.5cm high (3.25" × 3.25"), created using 8 ply yarn with a 3mm crochet hook
- Medium Cherries: Measuring 6cm wide by 6cm high (2.5" × 2.5"), made with 4 ply crochet cotton and a 1.5mm hook
- Small Cherries: Measuring 5cm wide by 4.5cm high (2" × 1.75"), crafted using 2 ply crochet cotton with a 1mm hook
