Product Description
Chapstick & Moon Boots is the fourth installment in the Night at the Movies sock club, inspired by John Hader’s epic dance scene, which tickles me every time I watch it. Our awkward hero dances his heart out with moves that can’t be beat!
Worked in the round, Chapstick & Moon Boots contains both cuff-down and toe-up written directions and a chart for the pattern stitch. The pattern has instructions for an afterthought heel, but you may substitute whatever heel you enjoy using.
The pattern is written for the magic loop method for knitting socks; however, the design could be worked on double-pointed needles or mini-circulars instead should you prefer.

What Is Being Made
Chapstick & Moon Boots is an intermediate-level knitted sock pattern designed by rhyFlower Knits. This downloadable PDF pattern creates socks with finished measurements of 7.5 to 9 inches (19 to 23 centimeters) in circumference around the ball of the foot, accommodating multiple sizes. The sample shown in the pattern was knit using the toe-up construction method on 60 stitches.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs cable knitting techniques as a primary design element, creating textured stitch patterns that give the socks their distinctive appearance. The toe-up construction method is featured, allowing knitters to begin at the toe and work toward the cuff, which provides advantages in fit customization and yarn management. The pattern requires working in the round using circular needles, a standard technique for sock knitting that eliminates seams.
Stitches and Cable Work
The Chapstick & Moon Boots pattern incorporates multiple cable crossing stitches to create its textured design:
- 1/1 LC (Left Cross): Slip one stitch to cable needle and hold at front, knit one, then knit one from cable needle
- 1/1 RC (Right Cross): Slip one stitch to cable needle and hold at back, knit one, then knit one from cable needle
- 1/1 LPC (Left Purl Cross): Slip one stitch to cable needle and hold at front, purl one, then knit one from cable needle
- 1/1 RPC (Right Purl Cross): Slip one stitch to cable needle and hold at back, knit one, then purl one from cable needle
- 1/1 LPT (Left Purl Twist): Slip one stitch to cable needle and hold at front, purl one, then knit one through the back loop from cable needle
- 1/1 RPT (Right Purl Twist): Slip one stitch to cable needle and hold at back, knit one, then purl one
These cable abbreviations indicate that the pattern uses one-over-one cables, creating subtle but elegant textured elements throughout the sock design.
Materials and Needles
The Chapstick & Moon Boots pattern calls for 4-ply yarn weight, which provides excellent stitch definition for the cable work and creates a durable, medium-weight sock suitable for regular wear. Knitters will need US1 (2.25 mm) circular needles measuring 32 to 40 inches (82 to 102 centimeters) in length, or needles sized appropriately to achieve the correct gauge. The longer circular needle length accommodates the in-the-round construction method used throughout the sock.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern is designed for knitters who have mastered basic sock construction and are ready to incorporate cable techniques into their projects. The multiple cable crossing variations require familiarity with cable needle work and the ability to read cable charts, making it an ideal project for advancing knitting skills.
