Celtic Weave Mini Slouch by Michelle Ferguson
What is Being Made
The Celtic Weave Mini Slouch is a crochet hat pattern designed by Michelle Ferguson, available in four sizing options to fit different age groups and head sizes. This slouch-style hat features a relaxed, comfortable fit that sits slightly loose on the head, making it an ideal accessory for casual wear. The pattern includes sizes for Toddler (18-20" circumference), Child (19-21" circumference), Small Adult (21-22" circumference), and Large Adult (22-23" circumference), with finished dimensions ranging from 8" x 9" to 9.5" x 9.5" when lying flat.
Techniques and Construction Method
This intermediate-level crochet project is worked from the bottom up, meaning you begin with the brim and work upward toward the crown of the hat. The construction method allows for straightforward progression and makes it easier to try on and adjust fit as you work. The pattern incorporates post stitches, which are advanced crochet techniques that create textured, dimensional effects by working into the post (vertical part) of stitches from previous rows rather than into the top loops.
Stitches Used
The Celtic Weave Mini Slouch utilizes several fundamental and intermediate crochet stitches to create its distinctive texture and structure:
- Chain (ch) – Used to create the foundation and for various construction elements throughout the pattern
- Double Crochet (dc) – A primary stitch that forms the base fabric; the pattern maintains a gauge of 6 double crochets and 3 rows per 2 inches
- Single Crochet (sc) – Used for shaping and finishing elements
- Front Post Triple Crochet (FPtc) – An advanced post stitch that creates raised texture by working around the post of stitches in previous rows, worked from the front side of the fabric
- Back Post Triple Crochet (BPtc) – The counterpart to front post triple crochet, worked from the back side to create dimensional contrast
- Front Post Triple Crochet 2 Together (FPtc2tog) – A decrease variation that combines two front post triple crochets into one stitch for shaping
- Back Post Triple Crochet 2 Together (BPtc2tog) – A decrease variation combining two back post triple crochets for shaping
Materials Required
The Celtic Weave Mini Slouch requires minimal materials, making it an economical project. You will need approximately 100-175 yards of aran weight yarn in your primary color choice, plus a small amount of contrasting color yarn for accent details. An I/9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook is recommended, though you should verify your hook size by checking your gauge before beginning—the pattern requires 6 double crochets and 3 rows to measure 2 inches. Additional materials include scissors, a measuring tape for checking sizing and gauge, and a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends after completion.
Pattern Features
The pattern is color-coded to distinguish between the different sizing options (Toddler, Child, Small Adult, and Large Adult), making it easy to follow the correct instructions for your intended size. Important pattern notes clarify that the starting chain does not count as the first stitch unless otherwise specified in individual pattern sections, which is a common convention in crochet patterns that affects stitch counting and construction.
