Product Description

This is the pattern for a cat potholder.

There is also a video tutorial for the pattern available on my YouTube channel.

I’ve used 8 ply cotton and a 2.5mm crochet hook but you can use different sizes depending on what you’re most comfortable with.

• I used light and dark grey, green, pink, white and black wool but you could use other colours. I used 8 ply wool which is light worsted in the US and double knitting in the UK. (Don’t use synthetic wool as it would melt). • A crochet hook, I used a 2.5mm hook. • Scissors. • Thread to sew together. • Sewing needle. • Darning needle to weave in ends. • Fine cotton (I used 4 ply crochet cotton) for the whiskers. You could embroider on the whiskers if you prefer.

Cat Potholder Crochet Pattern by Kerri's Crochet

Project Overview

This is an intermediate-level crochet pattern for a decorative cat potholder, designed by Kerri's Crochet. The potholder combines functional kitchen use with whimsical feline styling, making it suitable for crafters with some crochet experience who are ready to work with multiple colors and construction techniques.

What Is Being Made

A crochet cat potholder featuring a cat face design. The potholder is constructed in separate sections that are sewn together, with detailed facial features including eyes, whiskers, and color-blocked elements to create the cat's expression and character. This project is ideal for kitchen use while adding a charming decorative touch to any home.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches Used

The pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate crochet stitches to build structure and texture:

  • Chain stitch (ch) - Used for foundation and construction throughout the pattern
  • Slip stitch (sl st) - Applied to join rounds and create seamless transitions
  • Double crochet (dc) - A core stitch used for fabric density and structure
  • Half treble crochet (htr) - Incorporated for varied stitch heights
  • Treble crochet (tr) - Used extensively, particularly in the head construction where 14 treble stitches are worked into a magic loop for the foundational round
  • Double treble crochet (dtr) - Included in the stitch repertoire for additional texture variation

The pattern uses the magic loop technique to begin the head section, a method that creates a tight, adjustable center point ideal for working in the round. This approach is characteristic of intermediate crochet work and allows for clean, professional-looking circular pieces.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Cat Potholder pattern is designed using DK weight yarn (also known as 8 ply wool, light worsted in the US, or double knitting in the UK). This yarn weight provides a balanced fabric that is neither too loose nor too dense, making it ideal for a potholder that needs to maintain structure while remaining flexible.

Yarn colors used in the designer's version: Light grey, dark grey, green, pink, white, and black wool. The multi-color construction allows crafters to create distinct facial features and add personality to their cat design. The pattern notes that other colors may be substituted based on personal preference.

Important fiber note: The pattern specifies using natural wool rather than synthetic alternatives, as synthetic fibers would melt if exposed to heat from hot cookware—a critical consideration for a functional kitchen potholder.

Additional materials required:

  • A 2.5mm crochet hook (sized appropriately for DK weight yarn)
  • Scissors for cutting yarn
  • Thread for sewing pieces together
  • Sewing needle for assembly
  • Darning needle for weaving in yarn ends
  • Fine cotton yarn (4 ply crochet cotton) for creating whiskers, with an option to embroider whiskers as an alternative technique

Construction Method

The potholder is constructed in sections, with the head being worked in the round using the magic loop foundation. The pattern begins with a foundational round of 14 treble stitches worked into the magic loop, which is then pulled tight and joined with a slip stitch. Subsequent rounds build upon this base to create the three-dimensional cat head shape. Once all sections are completed, they are sewn together using thread and a sewing needle, with a darning needle used to finish by weaving in loose yarn ends for a polished appearance.

The whisker detail can be created using fine cotton yarn either by attaching pre-made strands or by embroidering directly onto the finished potholder, offering flexibility in finishing techniques.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it appropriate for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable working with multiple colors, managing yarn tension, and assembling pieces through sewing. The use of the magic loop technique and combination of various stitch heights adds complexity beyond beginner patterns while remaining accessible to developing crafters.
