Product Description
Three sweet little cats. Two different types of body, one worked in the round and the other flat in two colours. The siamese uses four different shades of cream through to dark brown but these were all left-overs so I don't have the details. The instructions for the siamese are slightly different to the two moggies because of its slender shape.. I used James C Brett Bubbalicious for the grey cat's tummy because it is so soft and I had some over from another prject but normal white DK will be fine if you don't have any.
Cat Finger Puppets by Rymell
What is Being Made
These are small crocheted cat finger puppets designed as toys, measuring approximately 9-10cm in finished height. The pattern includes instructions for creating three distinct cat designs: ginger cats, grey cats, and Siamese cats featuring multiple color variations (shades of cream, brown, mocha, and beige). Each puppet is constructed to fit over a finger, making them interactive toys suitable for play and display.
Crochet Techniques Used
This intermediate-level crochet project employs several fundamental techniques to create the three-dimensional finger puppet structure. The pattern begins with a magic ring foundation, which creates a tight, adjustable center point for the head. Increases are worked systematically across multiple rounds to expand the fabric and form the rounded head shape. Decreases using double crochet together stitches are then applied to shape and close the head, creating the characteristic rounded form. Color changes are incorporated throughout the pattern, particularly when transitioning from the white yarn used for initial stitches to the main body color, demonstrating mid-project color work techniques. The pattern also involves stuffing the completed head to create a three-dimensional, tactile toy.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes UK crochet stitch terminology throughout. The primary stitches employed are:
- Double crochet (dc) – the foundation stitch used for the majority of the fabric construction
- Double crochet two together (dc2tog) – a decrease stitch used to reduce stitch counts and shape the head
These basic stitches are repeated across ten rounds of structured increases and decreases to build the puppet form from a 6-stitch magic ring foundation up to 24 stitches at the widest point, then back down to 12 stitches before final closure.
Materials and Tools
The pattern calls for double knitting (DK) weight yarn, with approximately 25 yards of yarn required in total for each completed finger puppet. Specific yarn recommendations include James Brett Bubbalicious in white for certain design elements. A 3mm crochet hook is used for the primary construction, with a 2.5mm crochet hook also listed in the materials. Additional supplies include embroidery thread for details, toy stuffing for filling the head, a vanishing fabric marker for pattern marking, bobblehead pins for articulation or attachment, and a large-eyed needle for sewing and finishing. The recommended tension is 10cm square equals 19 double crochet stitches by 22 rows, providing guidance for achieving the correct finished size.
