Product Description
The name for this pattern derives from Madeira Cascade, the traditional Shetland lace pattern used throughout.
Cascadia is knitted from the bottom up to take advantage of the way the lace pattern works, producing a scalloped edge as well as an overall design. On completing the knitting, the 9 remaining stitches are grafted together.
The pattern includes written instructions for the lace as well as charts.
The yarn used is hand-dyed Literally Yarn, which is only available in small quantities in any colour. To substitute, choose a smooth lace weight yarn of about 800 metres / 874 yards to 100g.
Cascadia Shawl by Karen Butler
What is Being Made
The Cascadia Shawl is an intermediate-level knitted shawl design available in two sizes. The Small shawl measures approximately 124cm (49 inches) in wingspan and 58cm (23 inches) in depth, while the Large version spans 185cm (73 inches) with a depth of 79cm (31 inches). This downloadable PDF pattern allows knitters to create an elegant lace shawl suitable for various occasions and skill levels beyond complete beginners.
Techniques Used
The Cascadia Shawl employs lace knitting techniques characteristic of shawl construction. The pattern utilizes strategic decreasing methods to shape the garment and create the distinctive lace motifs. Knitters will work with directional stitches and shaping decreases throughout the project. The design demonstrates intermediate knitting proficiency, requiring familiarity with reading pattern instructions and executing consistent stitch work across multiple rows.
Stitches Used
This pattern incorporates a variety of essential knitting stitches and decreasing techniques:
- Basic stitches: knit (k) and purl (p) stitches form the foundation
- Decrease stitches: k2tog (knit 2 stitches together), p2tog (purl 2 stitches together), and p3tog (purl 3 stitches together) for shaping
- Slip-based decreases: sk2p (slip 1 stitch knitwise, k2tog, pass slipped stitch over), skp (slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit 1 stitch, pass slipped stitch over), and ssp (slip 2 stitches knitwise, purl 2 together through back loops) for refined lace edges
- Slip stitches: ss2p wyif (slip stitches with yarn in front) for decorative edging
- Markers: pm (place marker) for tracking pattern repeats
Materials
The Cascadia Shawl is designed for 4-ply laceweight yarn. Yarn requirements vary by size: the Small shawl requires approximately 400 metres (437 yards), while the Large shawl needs approximately 740 metres (809 yards). The design was originally created using Literally Yarn 'Subtle Lace', a premium blend of 80% Bluefaced Leicester wool and 20% silk, available in 800-metre (874-yard) skeins per 100g. The silk content adds subtle sheen and drape to the finished shawl. Knitters will need appropriate needles for laceweight yarn, though specific needle sizes are detailed in the complete pattern document. Standard knitting notions such as stitch markers and a tapestry needle for finishing are required to complete the project.
Design Notes
This pattern allows for size customization by adjusting the working gauge, though this will affect overall yarn requirements. The shawl's construction and lace patterning showcase designer Karen Butler's approach to intermediate-level shawl design, making it suitable for knitters seeking to expand their lace-working skills.
