Carrie Crochet Blanket by Flo's Crafty Crochet
Project Overview
Carrie is a beginner-friendly crochet blanket and throw pattern designed by Fiona Campbell of Flo's Crafty Crochet. This downloadable PDF pattern is ideal for crafters new to crochet who want to create a substantial, finished throw blanket suitable for home décor or gifting.
What Is Being Made
The Carrie pattern creates a crochet blanket or throw. The finished piece maintains a consistent stitch count of 119 stitches throughout, making it a structured and predictable project for beginners to follow and complete successfully.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques that are accessible to beginners while building essential skills. The construction uses standard row-based crochet methods with consistent stitch counts, allowing crafters to develop rhythm and muscle memory as they progress through the blanket.
Crochet Stitches Included
- Double Crochet (DC) – a foundational stitch used throughout many crochet projects
- Half Treble Crochet (HTR) – a medium-height stitch that adds texture and drape
- Treble Crochet (TR) – a taller stitch that creates openness and flow in the fabric
- Long Treble Crochet (LTR) – an extended stitch variation for dimensional effects
- Chain (CH) – the foundation stitch used to begin rows and create spaces
- Slip Stitch (SL ST) – used for joining and finishing
- Picot (PIC) – a decorative stitch detail that adds embellishment
The pattern also uses back loop only (BLO) crochet, a technique where the hook enters only the back loop of a stitch rather than both loops, creating a distinctive ridged texture. Spaces (SP) and chain spaces allow for openwork sections, while the skip (SK) instruction helps shape the blanket's structure.
Materials Required
Yarn: Up to 1650 meters of DK weight yarn. DK (double knit) yarn is a lightweight to medium-weight yarn that works well for blankets, creating a fabric that is neither too dense nor too airy, with good drape and softness.
Hook: 4mm crochet hook, which is the standard size for working with DK weight yarn and ensures proper stitch definition and fabric consistency.
Notions: Stitch markers are recommended to help track rows and pattern repeats, making it easier to keep your place and maintain accuracy throughout the project.
Pattern Notes
The pattern uses UK crochet terminology. An important construction note indicates that a chain 3 or chain 4 at the beginning of a row counts as either a Treble Crochet or Long Treble Crochet respectively, which is a common technique for maintaining even edges and stitch counts. The consistent total of 119 stitches per row provides structure and helps prevent the blanket from increasing or decreasing unintentionally.
