Product Description
Combine a mixture of bulky and double knit yarn to create a lacy, elegant and warm scarf. The shorter scarf is perfect for tucking into your coat to keep out the chill. However with the easy pattern repeat you can make this scarf as long or short as you wish. Combine coordinating block colours or have some fun using variegated yarn - the colour combinations are virtually endless!
Made from (at least) 200g of Bulky yarn (12ply / yarn weight #5) and (at least) 50g double knit (8ply / yarn weight #3) depending on your desired size scarf. Using a size 6mm (US size J) and 4mm hook (US size G). All my patterns feature both UK and US stitch terminology.

Carly Shell Scarf by Keep Calm and Crochet On UK
Project Overview
The Carly Shell Scarf is a downloadable crochet pattern designed by Keep Calm and Crochet On UK. This finished scarf measures 60 inches (1.5 metres) in length, making it a generous accessory suitable for wrapping and layering. The pattern uses a combination of yarn weights and hook sizes to create texture and drape.
What Is Being Made
This project creates a decorative scarf featuring shell stitch elements, a classic crochet technique that produces a scalloped, textured appearance. The finished piece is approximately 60 inches long, providing ample length for various styling options. The scarf is designed as a personal-use crochet pattern that can also be crafted as gifts or for sale by individual crafters.
Materials Required
- Yarn: 200g of 12ply / Bulky (Chunky) yarn (weight #5) and 40g of 8ply / Double Knit yarn (weight #3)
- Hooks: 6mm hook (US size J) and 4mm hook (US size G)
- Additional Supplies: Yarn needle for weaving in ends
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 9 treble or double crochet stitches equalling 2.5 inches (6.4 cm), with 3 rows measuring 3 inches (7.6 cm). Checking gauge before beginning is essential to achieve the intended finished dimensions. The pattern notes that actual finished measurements may vary slightly, and using different yarns will affect the final gauge and size accordingly.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Carly Shell Scarf employs fundamental crochet techniques to create its textured design. The pattern utilizes treble stitches (tr) and double crochet stitches (dc) as primary construction elements. Shell stitches, which are characteristic of this scarf, are created by working multiple stitches into the same stitch or space, producing the distinctive scalloped shell effect that gives the scarf its name and visual appeal.
The use of two different hook sizes—the larger 6mm (US J) for the bulky yarn and the smaller 4mm (US G) for the double knit yarn—allows the crocheter to work with appropriate tension and create varied stitch definition throughout the piece. This multi-hook approach adds dimension and visual interest to the finished scarf.
