Product Description
I wanted a scarf that avoided endless miles of boringly repetitive knitting, looked great on, yet was still quick and easy to make. So I came up with an Art Deco motif that grows up from each end, while a larger patterned section creates interest in the centre - shown off to great effect when the scarf is wound round your neck or looped double, as pictured. This is an easy project, suitable for a novice, but the motifs will hold an intermediate knitter’s interest. The pattern includes charts AND written instructions - ideal if you want to learn how to follow charts since you can refer to both. Shown in Fyberspates Scrumptious Aran.
Careen Scarf by Louise Zass-Bangham
Project Overview
The Careen Scarf is a luxurious knitted accessory designed by Louise Zass-Bangham, crafted from a sumptuous wool and silk blend yarn in aran weight. This long scarf combines warmth and elegance, making it an ideal choice for cold weather wrapping. The design features Art Deco motifs that grow upward from each end of the scarf, with a patterned section creating visual interest through the centre. The finished scarf displays beautifully when wound around the neck or looped double, showcasing the designer's thoughtful construction and aesthetic.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The Careen Scarf employs a combination of knitting techniques to balance visual appeal with knitting enjoyment. Rather than featuring endless repetitive rows, the pattern incorporates decorative motifs and patterned sections that maintain an intermediate knitter's interest throughout the project. The use of both charted instructions and written directions makes this pattern particularly accessible for knitters who wish to develop their chart-reading skills while still having written guidance as reference.
Stitches Used
- Moss Stitch (also known as seed stitch): This textured stitch creates visual interest and is worked over an even number of stitches. On right side rows, work moss stitch as knit one, purl one. On wrong side rows, reverse the pattern to purl one, knit one, maintaining the characteristic bumpy texture throughout.
- Knit and Purl Stitches: The fundamental building blocks of the pattern, used in combination to create the moss stitch base and chart-based motifs.
Materials and Yarn Weight
This project calls for aran weight yarn in a luxurious wool and silk blend, which provides exceptional warmth and drape. The aran weight ensures the scarf knits up relatively quickly while maintaining the sophisticated appearance of the finished piece. The wool component delivers insulating warmth ideal for bitterly cold weather, while the silk blend adds luxury and subtle sheen to the fabric.
Skill Level and Project Suitability
The Careen Scarf is classified as an intermediate knitting project, though the pattern is structured to be accessible to novice knitters who wish to challenge themselves. The inclusion of both charted and written instructions makes it an excellent teaching project for those learning to follow knitting charts. Intermediate knitters will find the motif work engaging without the tedium of repetitive plain knitting, making this a satisfying and relatively quick project to complete.
Pattern Format
This pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, offering convenient access to both charted instructions and written directions. The dual-format approach allows knitters to choose their preferred method of following instructions or to use both formats in conjunction for clarity and skill development.
