Product Description
I used this pattern to teach Godfrey, in Zimbabwe, how to knit. The pattern is simple and I claim no originality on the design. It's just a fun, quick knit! Written for Aran weight yarn with size 9 / 5.5mm needles. But easily adjusted for worsted, dk, chunky even sock yarn! Just go down or up needles size and add or reduce the number of stitches. The decreases can be adjusted as well (increments of 7 or 9 instead of 8)
If you are interested in Godfrey's story, and would like to contribute yarn, needles or money to my little project, please pm me here on LoveKnitting. You can read about Godfrey in my blog: HERE

Can't Save Zimbabwe Beanie by Beth Branson
Project Overview
Can't Save Zimbabwe is a beginner-friendly knitted beanie pattern designed by Beth Branson. This downloadable PDF pattern teaches fundamental knitting techniques while creating a practical, stretchy hat suitable for most head sizes. The pattern is free and includes a charitable component, with the designer encouraging knitters to learn more about the project's story at lustedtowander.blogspot.com.
What You'll Make
This pattern produces a classic knitted beanie hat with a one-size-fits-all design. The hat is constructed in the round using circular needles, resulting in a seamless, stretchy garment that accommodates various head sizes. Knitters can customize the fit by adjusting stitch counts during casting on and modifying the decrease phase accordingly.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Can't Save Zimbabwe introduces essential knitting skills ideal for beginners learning to work with circular needles. The pattern incorporates the following core techniques:
- Cast On: The pattern uses the long tail cast-on method to establish the foundation stitches
- Knit Stitch: The basic knit stitch forms the primary fabric structure
- Purl Stitch: Purl stitches are incorporated into the pattern design
- K2tog Decrease: This right-leaning decrease is executed by slipping the right needle through two stitches knitwise, then knitting both stitches together
- Joining in the Round: The pattern teaches proper technique for joining cast-on stitches to begin circular knitting without twisting
Materials and Tools
The beanie requires minimal materials, making it an economical project for beginners:
- Needles: Size 9 circular needles and size 9 double-pointed needles
- Yarn: Patons SWS yarn in aran weight, requiring one skein
- Additional Tools: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 15 stitches and 20 rows over 4 inches when knit in the round. The beanie begins with a cast-on of 72 stitches. The inherent stretchiness of the knitted fabric and the decrease shaping create a flexible fit. Knitters can modify the finished size by increasing or decreasing the number of cast-on stitches and adjusting the decrease phase accordingly.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner pattern, Can't Save Zimbabwe is specifically designed to teach newcomers to knitting. The use of circular needles, which are noted as easy to hold and maneuver, combined with fundamental stitch techniques, makes this an accessible introduction to knitting in the round. The straightforward construction and limited stitch vocabulary provide an ideal learning project.
Pattern Format
This pattern is available as a free, downloadable PDF document, making it easily accessible for digital reference while knitting. The format allows knitters to print the pattern or view it on devices while working.
