Canola Poncho by Linda Marveng

What Is Being Made

Canola is a one-size poncho named after the Irish deity of music and magic. This versatile garment features a generous bust measurement of 194 cm (76.5 inches) and a length of 74.5 cm (29.25 inches), making it an oversized, flowing piece suitable for layering. The poncho can be worn belted, secured with a shawl pin at the front, or left loose for maximum drape and comfort. Short sleeves measuring 32 cm (12.5 inches) provide structure and help hold the poncho in place on the shoulders.

Design Features and Construction

The Canola poncho showcases a distinctive construction method that begins with a lower cable panel. The upper section is picked up and knitted directly from this lower panel, creating a seamless transition between the two main sections. This pickup method is a hallmark of efficient garment construction and eliminates the need for seaming in this area.

The design emphasizes cable work at the bottom and along the high collar, providing visual interest and textural depth. These sideways cables are a prominent design element that frames the neckline and anchors the lower edge. The upper body is worked in stockinette stitch, which provides a smooth, classic canvas that contrasts beautifully with the dimensional cables.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

  • Cable stitches: Featured prominently on the lower cable panel and high collar, cables create the signature textured pattern of this design
  • Stockinette stitch: Used throughout the upper section and body for a smooth, refined finish
  • Ribbed stitches: The short sleeves are worked in rib, which provides elasticity and helps the sleeves grip the arms while maintaining structure
  • Pickup and knit method: Rather than binding off and seaming, stitches are picked up from the lower cable panel to create the upper body, reducing bulk and creating clean transitions
  • Shoulder shaping: Strategic decreases shape the shoulders for a more fitted garment that drapes elegantly despite the generous overall dimensions

Yarn and Materials

The sample garment is knitted in Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk Tinde Pelsull, a luxurious Norwegian pelt wool yarn composed of 100% wool. This yarn is supplied in 100 g skeins with a yardage of 260 m (284 yds) per skein. The project requires 9 skeins, totaling 2158 m (2360 yds), and the sample is worked in the colorway Burgundy 2104.

The yarn weight is classified as DK weight, a medium-light yarn that works well for garments requiring drape and fluidity. The pelt wool fiber provides warmth and a distinctive texture that enhances the cable and stockinette patterns.

An alternative yarn option is provided: Berroco Ultra Alpaca Light, a blend of 50% alpaca and 50% wool supplied in 50 g skeins with 133 m (144 yds) per skein. This alternative offers a softer hand and lighter weight while maintaining similar yardage requirements.

Difficulty Level

Canola is rated as an intermediate knitting project. This difficulty level reflects the combination of cable work, pickup techniques, and shaping required. Knitters should be comfortable with cable stitches, reading pattern instructions for increases and decreases, and managing multiple sections of a garment. The pickup method and shoulder shaping add complexity beyond basic stockinette projects, making this suitable for knitters with some experience.
