Callaway Cable Scarf by Jane Veitenheimer – Pattern Summary
The Callaway Cable Scarf is a chunky, reversible knitted scarf designed by Jane Veitenheimer and released as part of Blue Sky Fibers' Traveler Series. It features a dramatic giant braided cable that is described as both cozy and elegant, making it a standout accessory that works equally well on either side. The pattern is rated Intermediate in difficulty, making it an excellent introduction to large-scale cable work for knitters who are comfortable with basic ribbing and ready to take on their first cable project.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a single-size knitted scarf with impressive finished dimensions: 81 inches in length, 5½ inches wide at the cable crossings, and 7 inches wide in between crossings. The varying width created by the cable crossings gives the scarf a sculptural, textured appearance. The piece is intentionally designed to be fully reversible, so both sides present a polished, finished look — a particularly thoughtful detail for a scarf that will be worn and seen from multiple angles.
Yarn Options and Materials
Jane Veitenheimer offers knitters two luxurious yarn options, both from Blue Sky Fibers, allowing for different colorways and slightly different drape and texture:
- Blue Sky Fibers Brushed Suri (67% Baby Suri, 22% Fine Merino, 11% Bamboo; 50g / 142 yards per hank) — 7 hanks required. The cover colorway shown is No. 910 Candied Apple. This yarn brings a soft, hazy halo typical of suri alpaca, with the bamboo content adding a subtle sheen and drape.
- Blue Sky Fibers Techno (68% Baby Alpaca, 22% Silk, 10% Fine Merino; 50g / 120 yards per hank) — 8 hanks required. The inside colorway shown is No. 1971 Metro Silver. The silk content in Techno gives this version a lustrous, smooth finish with excellent stitch definition.
Both yarns fall into the chunky to DK weight range and are worked on size 15 (10mm) circular needles, 24 inches or longer. The large needle size relative to the yarn creates a relaxed, drapey fabric well suited to a cozy scarf. Additional materials include a removable stitch marker, a tapestry needle for finishing, and a long cable needle or double-pointed needle for executing the cable crossings.
Techniques and Construction
The scarf is worked flat, back and forth in rows, using a circular needle simply to accommodate the large stitch count of 72 cast-on stitches. It is not joined in the round. This straightforward flat construction keeps the project accessible while the cable detail provides visual interest and a satisfying challenge.
The fabric is built on a foundation of 1×1 ribbing — alternating knit and purl stitches — which forms the base of both the body sections and the cable crossings themselves. Because the ribbing runs throughout, the scarf maintains its reversible quality even through the cable sections. The gauge for this pattern is 13 stitches and 12 rows to 4 inches in 1×1 rib, unstretched, though the pattern notes that exact gauge is not critical and will primarily affect the finished size and drape of the piece.
Stitches and Cable Details
The primary stitches used in the Callaway Cable Scarf are:
- 1×1 Rib — the foundational stitch pattern used throughout the scarf body, created by alternating k1, p1 across every row.
- 24/24 Ribbed Left Cable (LC) — 24 stitches are slipped to a cable needle and held to the front, the next 24 stitches are worked in 1×1 rib, then the held stitches are worked in 1×1 rib from the cable needle. This creates a left-leaning cable cross.
