Product Description
This cowl is a great way to practice some colourwork. There is both a chart and written instructions.
It is knit in the round seamlessly from one edge to the other. After casting on you will knit the ribbed edge in 2x1 rib (k, k, p) and then follow the chart or written instructions to repeat the pattern. The yarn chosen changes colour gradually to highlight the cactus pattern.

What is Being Made
The Cactus Cowl is a seamless, in-the-round knitted cowl featuring a colorwork cactus pattern. Available in two sizes—Child (51 cm / 20 inches circumference, 21.5 cm / 8.5 inches height) and Adult (70 cm / 27.5 inches circumference, 34.5 cm / 13.5 inches height)—this cowl is designed to be worn as a neck warmer or collar-style accessory. The design showcases a cactus motif created through strategic color changes in the yarn, making it both a functional and visually interesting knitted piece.
Techniques Used
This cowl is constructed using seamless in-the-round knitting, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a continuous, polished finished garment. The pattern incorporates colorwork knitting, a technique where two or more yarn colors are worked simultaneously to create a patterned design. The designer has thoughtfully chosen yarns that change color gradually, which helps highlight and enhance the cactus pattern throughout the cowl. Both a chart and written instructions are provided, giving knitters flexibility in how they prefer to follow the pattern.
Stitches Used
The cowl begins with a 2x1 ribbed edge, worked as knit, knit, purl (k, k, p) repeats. This ribbed foundation provides elasticity and helps the cowl maintain its shape and fit around the neck. Following the ribbed edge, knitters work the colorwork pattern either by following a chart or using written instructions, repeating the cactus pattern across the height of the cowl.
Materials
The Cactus Cowl is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn. The pattern specifies Rowan Felted Tweed for Yarn A (shade 211) and Rowan Felted Tweed Colour for Yarn B (shade 027). Rowan Felted Tweed is a premium blend containing 25% Viscose, 50% Wool, and 25% Alpaca, offering a soft, durable fiber with excellent stitch definition ideal for colorwork. Yardage requirements are 109 to 239 metres (120 to 261 yards) depending on size, with the pattern requiring 1 ball for the Child size and 2 balls for the Adult size. Circular needles appropriate for DK weight yarn are needed to work this cowl in the round.
Difficulty Level
Rated as Intermediate, the Cactus Cowl is suitable for knitters with some experience. The combination of in-the-round knitting, ribbed edging, and colorwork techniques requires foundational knitting skills and familiarity with managing multiple yarn colors, making it an excellent project for practicing and refining colorwork abilities.
