Product Description
Mosaic pattern makes the most of Noro’s spectacular color runs.
This is a six-stitch, sixteen-row repeat. And since your wrong side rows are repeats of the previous row, the pattern is easily memorized.
Done on size nine needles, it practically pours off the needles. And it is so much fun to watch the colors develop.
I used only one color of the Silk Garden Lite. I simply started the two strands at a different point in the color run.

Byzantine Stole by Susan Pandorf
Project Overview
The Byzantine Stole is an advanced knitting project designed by Susan Pandorf that draws inspiration from the rich artistic heritage of Byzantine mosaics. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a sophisticated wrap featuring a mosaic design that celebrates the golden mosaics central to Byzantine culture, which flourished from the 6th to the 15th century. The finished stole measures 20 inches wide by 72 to 82 inches long, making it a versatile accessory suitable for draping across the shoulders or wearing as a generous scarf.
Design and Inspiration
The Byzantine Stole incorporates mosaic design elements into its knitted structure. Mosaics were fundamental to Byzantine artistic expression, particularly in church interiors where golden mosaics adorned the walls and ceilings. Though many Byzantine mosaics were lost to history during wars and conquests, the surviving examples continue to inspire contemporary craftspeople. This pattern translates that historical artistic tradition into a wearable textile using mosaic knitting techniques.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This advanced-level pattern employs mosaic knitting, a technique that creates intricate colorwork designs without the complexity of traditional stranded colorwork. The mosaic method uses strategic slip stitches to build patterns across the fabric. The pattern notes that three selvedge stitches are maintained on both the right and wrong sides, always knit in the row's color and never slipped, ensuring clean finished edges. All other stitches follow a standard approach: knit on the right side and purled on the wrong side, with slipped stitches used selectively to form the mosaic pattern as indicated in the accompanying chart.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Byzantine Stole requires 6 balls of DK weight yarn totaling 816 yards. The pattern specifically recommends Noro Silk Garden Lite, a DK weight yarn that provides the appropriate drape and stitch definition for this project. Knitters may substitute any DK weight yarn of similar yardage and characteristics. US Size 9 circular needles are required to work the stole, which is knit in one continuous piece from end to end.
Gauge and Finished Dimensions
The pattern specifies a gauge of 4 stitches and 8 rows per 1 inch when blocked. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions of 20 inches wide by 72 to 82 inches long. Knitters should knit a gauge swatch, block it according to yarn fiber content, and measure carefully before beginning the project to ensure successful results.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as advanced difficulty, making it suitable for experienced knitters who are comfortable with colorwork techniques, reading charts, and managing the nuances of mosaic knitting. The combination of mosaic patterning, chart reading, and the length of the project requires solid foundational knitting skills and familiarity with intermediate to advanced techniques.
