Product Description
An easy knitting pattern for a buttoned cowl scarf. It can easily be made wider or longer. You can knit a small neck warmer or a more substantial scarf. It works up quickly using large needles and bulky yarn. I use Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick but you can use another bulky yarn. You are welcome to sell items made with this pattern.

What is Being Made
The Buttoned Ribbed Cowl is a beginner-friendly knitted neck warmer designed to be worn as a cozy cowl-style scarf. This project creates a finished piece measuring 22 inches long and 6 inches wide, featuring a classic ribbed texture enhanced with functional button closures. The cowl provides warmth and style with an elegant, fitted neckline aesthetic.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project suitable for beginners. The design employs fundamental knitting techniques including casting on, basic stitch manipulation, and buttonhole construction. The pattern uses slip stitches at the beginning of rows to create clean, finished edges—a technique that improves the overall appearance of the final piece. The cowl is worked in the round conceptually but constructed flat on straight needles, with frequent row turns that make short needles particularly practical for this project.
Stitches Used
- Knit (K) – The primary stitch forming the base fabric
- Purl (P) – Used in alternating rows to create the ribbed texture
- Slip stitches – Worked at the beginning of rows (slipped as if to purl or as if to knit) to create neat, professional edges
- Buttonholes – Created using a pick-up and pass-over technique to allow button closure
Materials and Tools
This project requires 1 skein of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick yarn in the super chunky weight category, making it a quick knit. Size 13 straight knitting needles are recommended, with short needles preferred due to the short row length and frequent turning. A darning or embroidery needle is needed for sewing on buttons and finishing. Two buttons measuring 1 to 1½ inches wide serve as the functional closures. A small amount of thinner yarn in a matching color is required for attaching buttons if the chunky yarn cannot pass through the button holes. The pattern specifies a gauge of 15 stitches over 6 inches, ensuring proper fit and drape.
Pattern Overview
The Buttoned Ribbed Cowl begins with casting on 15 stitches (adjustable for desired width) and establishes a ribbed pattern through alternating knit and purl rows with slip-stitch edge treatments. The core pattern repeats rows 3 through 5 until the piece reaches 19 inches in length, with flexibility to extend the cowl longer if desired. Buttonholes are strategically placed to allow the cowl to be buttoned closed at the neck, combining both decorative and functional elements in a single, elegant design.
