Product Description
I designed this flower pin for the 2014 National Crochet Month designer blog tour. If you enjoy crocheting pretty, functional items (to use or give as gifts), have lots of buttons and crochet thread, and 1-2 hours of time, this project is perfect for you!
The flower pin can be made with any colors of crochet thread or yarn that you desire. Size 10 or size 3 cotton crochet threads can be used, as well as lace weight or fingering weight yarn. It doesn't take many yards, so it's perfect for using up scraps of thread or yarn!
The optional edging around the flower petals gives the flower more visual interest.
You can also layer more than one button and use some beads to embellish your Button Flower Pins.
I hope you enjoy creating some fun-to-wear and fun-to-give Button Flower Pins, using your favorite buttons or vintage buttons!
Button Flower Pin by Susan Lowman
What is Being Made
The Button Flower Pin is a small decorative crochet accessory designed to be worn as jewelry. This beginner-friendly project creates delicate flower pins in two size options: a small flower pin measuring 1 1/2" (3.8cm) in diameter, or a larger version at 2 1/2" (6.4cm) in diameter. The finished piece features a decorative button at its center and is backed with a pin fastening, making it suitable for wearing on clothing, hats, or bags. The design allows for creative customization using any colors of crochet thread or yarn, making each pin unique to the maker's preferences.
Techniques Used
This crochet pattern employs fundamental techniques appropriate for beginners learning the craft. The construction method involves working with fine crochet thread to create delicate flower petals. An optional edging technique is included to add visual interest and definition to the flower petals, allowing makers to enhance their finished piece if desired. The pattern incorporates basic assembly methods, including attaching a button to serve as the flower's center point and securing a pin back to the completed crocheted flower using a hot glue gun (optional).
Stitches Used
While the PDF content does not specify individual stitch names, the pattern is designed at an easy skill level, indicating it uses fundamental crochet stitches suitable for beginners. The optional edging suggests the inclusion of edge-finishing stitches to frame and define the flower petals.

Yarn Weight and Material Specifications
This project utilizes fine-weight crochet materials, specifically 4-ply thread and lace-weight options. The use of cotton crochet thread—available in size 10 for the small version and size 3 for the large version—provides the delicate, refined appearance appropriate for jewelry-scale pieces. Cotton thread offers durability and a polished finish suitable for decorative pins.
