Busy Lizzy's Patchwork Blanket by Hookfully

Project Overview

Busy Lizzy's Patchwork Blanket is an intermediate-level crochet pattern designed to create a beautiful patchwork throw blanket. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Hookfully guides crafters through constructing a blanket using individual squares that are worked separately and then assembled together. The patchwork design combines multiple colored squares with white sections, creating a striking visual effect perfect for adding texture and warmth to any room.

What You'll Create

This pattern produces a patchwork blanket made up of individual crochet squares. Each square features the Elizabeth stitch, a decorative crochet technique that adds visual interest and dimension to the finished piece. The blanket is assembled by joining completed squares together, allowing crafters to customize the final size and color arrangement based on their preferences and yarn availability.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

The pattern utilizes several fundamental crochet techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters:

  • Elizabeth Stitch: The primary stitch used throughout the pattern, creating the textured foundation of each patchwork square
  • Single Crochet (sc): A basic stitch used in construction and shaping
  • Chain Stitch (ch): Used for foundation rows and increases
  • Mini Bean Stitch (mb): A decorative stitch variation incorporated into the design for added texture
  • Slip Stitch (sl st): Used for joining rounds and connecting squares
  • Increases (2sc): Worked as 2 single crochets in 1 space to shape the squares appropriately

Materials Required

The pattern calls for specific materials to achieve the intended finished product:

  • Yarn Weight: DK / Light Worsted weight yarn (also referred to as #3 weight)
  • Yarn Brand: King Cole Pricewise in various colors
  • Yarn Quantities: Approximately 41 yards of colored yarn per square and 19 yards of white yarn per square
  • Crochet Hook: 4mm hook, appropriate for working with DK weight yarn
  • Additional Supplies: Scissors and a sewing needle for assembling and finishing the blanket

Gauge and Construction Details

The pattern specifies a gauge of 2 inches by 2 inches equals 10 rows of 9 single crochets, helping crafters ensure their finished squares are the correct size before assembly. This gauge information is essential for achieving proper dimensions and ensuring that all squares fit together seamlessly when joined. The intermediate skill level indicates that crafters should be comfortable with basic stitches and have experience reading crochet patterns before beginning this project.
