Burnished Gold Gauntlets by Andrea Jurgrau

Project Overview

The Burnished Gold Gauntlets are an elegant knitted accessory designed as an intermediate-level lace knitting project. These gauntlets represent a sophisticated adventure for knitters with experience in lace techniques and sock construction, combining delicate lacework with luxurious materials and decorative beading.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a pair of gauntlets—hand and wrist coverings that extend partway up the forearm. The design is suitable for both lace knitters and sock knitters seeking a refined accessory project. The gauntlets feature integrated beadwork using metallic seed beads that add sparkle and dimension to the lace pattern.

Craft and Techniques

Primary Craft: Knitting

The Burnished Gold Gauntlets employ intermediate-level knitting techniques centered around lace construction. The project utilizes lace-weight yarn, which creates an open, delicate fabric with intricate stitch patterns. Knitters will work with charted lace patterns that require attention to yarn overs, decreases, and stitch placement to achieve the intended openwork design.

Beading is incorporated into the construction process, adding a decorative element that elevates the finished piece. The pattern includes instructions for threading beads onto the yarn or using a crochet hook to apply them during knitting, a technique common in advanced lace and embellished knit projects.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The gauntlets are worked in a charted lace pattern that repeats across the circumference. The gauge is established at 16 stitches to 1.75 inches in the pattern stitch, meaning one complete chart repeat measures 1.75 inches. This gauge is typical for lace-weight yarn and creates the delicate, open fabric characteristic of fine lace knitting.

Construction begins with a cast-on of 64 stitches distributed evenly across four double-pointed needles (16 stitches per needle), worked in the round using the circular knitting method. The pattern is worked in rounds, maintaining the lace motifs as established in the charted instructions.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Yarn: One skein (55 grams) of Jade Sapphire 2-ply cashmere or silk/cashmere blend. The pattern was created using the Burnished Gold colorway, which provides a warm, metallic tone that complements the rose gold beading.

Needles and Tools: One set of five US 0 double-pointed needles in a shorter length, or needles sized to achieve the specified gauge. A US 12 or smaller crochet hook is required to fit through the holes in the seed beads during the beading process.

Beads and Embellishments: 8/0 seed beads totaling 6 grams. The designer used Mill Hill metallic Rose Gold beads, which create a coordinated, luxurious finish with the Burnished Gold yarn.

Additional Supplies: Stitch markers (optional but recommended for tracking pattern repeats), waste yarn for provisional cast-on or stitch holding, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and finishing.

Yarn Weight and Fiber Content

This project features lace-weight yarn, one of the finest yarn weights used in knitting. The Jade Sapphire 2-ply construction provides a smooth, lustrous fiber that showcases lace stitch definition beautifully. The cashmere or silk/cashmere blend offers exceptional softness, drape, and a subtle sheen that enhances the gauntlets' elegant appearance. These luxury fibers are ideal for projects worn close to the skin, such as hand and wrist accessories.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes knitters have solid foundational skills including proficiency with double-pointed needles, comfort reading charted lace patterns, and experience managing yarn overs and decreases. The combination of lace knitting and beadwork integration places this project at the intermediate level rather than beginner, though experienced lace knitters may find it accessible.
