Product Description
Brocket features a lace pattern of interlocking “V”s reminiscent of a stag’s antlers running up the outside of each foot and leg. A brocket is a two year old red deer stag, who has smooth unbranching antlers – just like the lace pattern! Knit from the toe up with a gusset and heel flap, these socks are a great mix of relaxing knit and engaging pattern – perfect for travel knitting or chilling with a film!
The pattern is fully written and the lace is also charted so whichever way you like to read your patterns, you’re covered! The pattern has been tech edited and test knitted. There’s a screenshot of the pattern, and a list of the stitches used at the bottom of the photos. You will also need to know how to do Judy’s Magic Cast-On and a stretchy bind off like Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off.
I knit these socks with Cat and Sparrow Eco-warrior Sock, and if you’d like to knit them with the same yarn, Rachael’s selling Brocket Sock Kits on her website with a choice of colours!
Brocket Socks by Liz Corke
What Is Being Made
Brocket is a pair of knitted socks featuring an elegant lace pattern of interlocking "V"s that run up the outside of each foot and leg, creating a design reminiscent of a stag's antlers. These socks are available in four finished sizes: Small (17.5 cm / 7" circumference), Medium (20 cm / 8" circumference), Large (22.5 cm / 9" circumference), and Extra Large (25 cm / 10" circumference). The socks are designed to be worn with up to 0–2.5 cm (0–1") of negative ease for a secure, comfortable fit.
Knitting Techniques
Brocket employs a toe-up construction method, which allows knitters to try on the socks as they progress and easily adjust the length to their preference. The pattern incorporates a gusset and heel flap, traditional sock-shaping techniques that provide structure and durability in high-wear areas. The design balances engaging colorwork and texture with relaxing stockinette sections, making it suitable for various knitting environments—whether traveling, watching films, or simply enjoying leisurely crafting sessions.
Stitches and Pattern Details
The primary stitch used throughout Brocket is stockinette stitch, worked in the round. The lace pattern of interlocking "V"s is integrated into the leg and foot sections, creating visual interest without overwhelming the knitter. The pattern requires attention during the lace rows but alternates with simpler stockinette sections, making it accessible to intermediate-level knitters who have experience with basic increases, decreases, and lace techniques.
Materials and Specifications
- Yarn: 400 m (437 yards) of Cat and Sparrow Eco-warrior in the colorway Green Room. This yarn is composed of 70% Bluefaced Leicester and 30% Tencel, weighing 437 yards per 100g, and is classified as 4-ply weight—ideal for sock knitting.
- Needles: 2.5 mm (US 1.5) circular needles, 80 cm (32") or longer, or double-pointed needles (DPNs) using your preferred method for knitting in the round.
- Notions: 4 stitch markers per sock, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and optional sock blockers for finishing.
- Gauge: 32 stitches and 44 rows in 10 cm (4") measured over stockinette stitch worked in the round.
Craft and Skill Level
Brocket is rated as an intermediate knitting project. This classification reflects the combination of fundamental sock construction (toe-up shaping, gusset, heel flap) with the added complexity of a lace pattern. Knitters should be comfortable with circular needle techniques, increasing and decreasing stitches, reading lace charts, and managing multiple stitches in the round before beginning this project. The alternating pattern and stockinette sections provide natural breaks in concentration, making the socks engaging without being overly demanding.
