British Birds & Nests - Mini Creme Egg Covers
What is Being Made
This knitting pattern by Needles & Pins creates a charming set of decorative mini nests paired with sitting bird figures, designed to hold small foiled chocolate eggs. The collection features four different British bird species: Blue Tit, Robin, Song Thrush, and Blackbird. Each nest measures 7cm in diameter and accommodates standard mini chocolate eggs, while the individual birds measure approximately 5cm in height. These pieces function as springtime table favours, Easter tree decorations, or can be hidden in garden shrubs for outdoor Easter egg hunts.
Techniques Used
The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The nest construction begins with a cast-on foundation and uses increases worked into the front and back of stitches to expand the base. Decreases are incorporated using knit two together sequences to shape the nest structure and reduce stitch counts as the piece develops. The pattern combines two primary stitch patterns: Garter Stitch for the main body of the nest, which creates a textured, ridged fabric, and Stocking Stitch for shaping sections. The bird components require stuffing techniques to create three-dimensional forms.
Stitches Used
- Knit Stitch (K): The foundation stitch used throughout the nest construction
- Purl Stitch (P): Used when beginning the Stocking Stitch sections
- Knit Front and Back (KFB): An increase technique that doubles stitches by working into both the front and back loops
- Knit Two Together (K2tog): A right-leaning decrease used to reduce stitch counts and shape the nest
- Garter Stitch: Created by knitting every row, producing horizontal ridges ideal for textured nest walls
- Stocking Stitch: Alternating knit and purl rows to create smooth fabric used in the nest shaping sections
Materials Required
This pattern requires minimal materials, making it ideal for using leftover yarn scraps. Crafters need a pair of 3.25mm knitting needles and DK weight yarn in various colours to represent the different bird species and create the nest. Small amounts of toy stuffing or cotton wool are needed to fill the bird figures and give them dimension. The nests are designed to hold any brand of mini foiled chocolate eggs, offering flexibility in finishing the project.
