Product Description
A long, crescent-shaped shawl with great drape and airiness, inspired by a rainbow appearing on a grey rainy day. Bright colours excite me, and as a sure-fire pick-me-up, beautifully-dyed sock yarn is in a class of its own!
This shawl is knit from the bottom up. The lace patterns are easily memorised, and are fully charted so you can tick off the rows as you go.
Materials: Main colour: 300 yards of fingering-weight yarn. For the rainbow edge: 25 yards of fingering-weight yarn in each colour (or 100 yards in a single contrasting colour, if you prefer). For a single-colour shawl, you will need 400 yards of fingering-weight yarn.
Sizing: My shawl is 235cm long along the rainbow edge, and 28cm deep. You can make it bigger or smaller by changing the number of repeats in Chart 3 before binding off.
Pattern is for personal use only.
Bright Side Crescent Shawl by Amy van de Laar
What is Being Made
Bright Side is a long, crescent-shaped shawl designed by Amy van de Laar, featuring exceptional drape and airiness. The shawl is inspired by the visual beauty of a rainbow appearing against a grey rainy day, making it an ideal project for knitters seeking to incorporate vibrant colour work into their handmade accessories. The crescent silhouette creates an elegant, versatile garment suitable for layering or wearing as a statement piece.
Design Inspiration and Colour Options
The designer emphasizes that Bright Side can be knit in any colour combination according to personal preference. Several suggested colourway options include:
- Dark stormy grey with a silver lining edge
- Cloudy grey with a sunny yellow edge
- Watermelon-pink with white and green rind detailing
- Citrusy orange or yellow with a darker rind
- Custom favourite colour combinations
Knitting Techniques and Construction
Bright Side is knit from the bottom up, allowing knitters to easily visualize the shawl's growth and adjust fit as needed. The construction method provides flexibility for customizing the final dimensions while maintaining the intended crescent shape and drape characteristics.
Lace Patterns and Stitch Work
The shawl features lace patterns that are easily memorised, making this an excellent choice for advanced knitters seeking engaging stitch work without excessive complexity. All lace patterns are fully charted, allowing knitters to track progress by ticking off completed rows. This charted approach supports knitters in maintaining rhythm and accuracy throughout the project.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
Bright Side is designed for fingering-weight yarn, also known as sock yarn. The designer notes that beautifully-dyed sock yarn offers exceptional visual appeal and quality. Yarn yardage requirements vary based on colourway choice:
- Rainbow edge version: 300 yards of fingering-weight yarn in main colour, plus 25 yards of fingering-weight yarn in each additional colour (or 100 yards in a single contrasting colour as an alternative)
- Single-colour version: 400 yards of fingering-weight yarn total
Skill Level
This project is classified as advanced difficulty, making it suitable for experienced knitters with solid foundational skills and comfort working with lace patterns and charted instructions.
