About This Pattern

This is Part Seven (Meadow) of the Botanical Garden Colourwork Blanket KAL, a knit-along series designed by Rosee Woodland and published by West Yorkshire Spinners. The completed project is a stunning colourwork blanket or throw, built panel by panel across multiple KAL instalments, with this instalment contributing the Meadow-themed panel to the overall design.

Finished Measurements

Once all panels are assembled and blocked, the complete blanket measures approximately 85cm wide by 83cm tall. Each individual panel, including the Meadow panel featured in this instalment, measures 20cm wide by 19.5cm tall after blocking. The decorative edging adds a further 2.5cm of width around the blanket.

What Is Being Made

Knitters are constructing a large, heirloom-quality colourwork blanket or throw made up of multiple individual botanical-themed panels. Each panel in the KAL series features a different nature-inspired motif worked in stranded or strandtarsia colourwork. The Meadow panel is the seventh in the series. Once all panels are complete, they are joined together and finished with a knitted edging to create the full blanket. An optional fabric backing using cotton jersey and matching polyester sewing thread can be added for extra warmth and a polished finish.

Techniques Used

• Stranded colourwork – a traditional technique where two or more yarn colours are carried across the back of the work, creating floats, to produce intricate multi-colour motifs across each panel
• Strandtarsia colourwork – a hybrid technique combining elements of stranded colourwork and intarsia, allowing for more complex colour placement with reduced float lengths, ideal for detailed botanical imagery
• Circular knitting for edging – the blanket's border is worked on a long circular needle, allowing the edging to be picked up and knitted around the entire assembled blanket
• Blocking – an essential finishing step for colourwork knitting; both the individual panels and the finished blanket are blocked to even out stitches and achieve the stated measurements
• Optional fabric backing – sewing a cotton jersey lining to the reverse of the finished blanket for added structure and warmth

Stitches Used

• Stranded colourwork stitches – worked flat on straight needles for the individual panels, following a charted motif
• Strandtarsia stitches – used for sections of the panel design requiring isolated blocks of colour without long floats across the full row width
