Product Description
I love quick weekend projects and this pattern is ideal for just that.
The hat is made using just 1 ball of Rowan Big Wool. The finished item is quite stretchy so will fit various sizes.
This beanie is very similar to one of my other patterns - 'Big Wool' Beanie 1. The only difference is that this hat is worked in double crochet throughout and has an altenative finished edge, whereas the other hat introduces half treble crochet stitch. Both are very easy to make as a first project.
Big wool is very easy to work with and has some wonderful colours.
You will need an aditional ball of wool if you want to make a pom pom in the same colour, otherwise go for a contrasting colour or a fur pom pom.
'Big Wool' Beanie Hat 2 by Just Fred
What Is Being Made
The 'Big Wool' Beanie Hat 2 is a beginner-friendly crochet beanie designed for a finished head circumference of 52cm. The hat features a stretchy construction that accommodates a wider fit, making it a versatile accessory suitable for various head sizes. This downloadable crochet pattern from independent designer Just Fred offers a straightforward project perfect for those new to crochet.
Crochet Techniques Used
This beanie pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques that make it ideal for beginners. The construction relies on basic stitch work combined with strategic shaping to create a fitted hat. A reverse double crochet stitch, commonly known as crab stitch, is used to create a decorative and textured edge finish on the completed piece, adding visual interest and a professional appearance to the final garment.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes three primary crochet stitches:
- Chain stitch (ch): The foundation stitch used to create the base of the project
- Double crochet (dc): The main body stitch that forms the bulk of the beanie fabric, created by inserting the hook, yarning over, pulling a loop through, then pulling yarn through both stitches on the hook
- Crab stitch (reverse double crochet/rdc): A decorative edging stitch worked in reverse that creates a textured, finished border around the hat opening
A slipstitch is also referenced in the pattern for joining rounds and securing stitches.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The 'Big Wool' Beanie Hat 2 requires minimal materials, making it an economical project. You will need one 100-gram ball of Rowan Big Wool yarn, a super chunky weight yarn that measures 80 metres per ball. A 10mm crochet hook is specified for working this pattern, though the yarn weight accommodates hook sizes ranging from 10mm to 15mm for tension adjustments.
The super chunky weight of Rowan Big Wool means this hat works up quickly, allowing beginners to see rapid progress and complete the project in a reasonable timeframe. The yarn's substantial thickness creates a warm, dense fabric ideal for winter wear.
Tension and Gauge Information
The pattern specifies a tension of 7.5 to 9 stitches and 10 to 12.5 rows over a 10x10cm tension square when using 10mm to 15mm needles. Checking tension before beginning ensures your finished beanie will achieve the intended 52cm head circumference and fit properly. Adjusting hook size up or down can modify tension if needed to match the pattern requirements.
